be noticeably aected. If the brain is a whirlpool of mind, the
patterns of whose ow determine the qualities of subjective
experience, then physical interference with the brain should indeed
alter subjective experience insofar as it changes such patterns; that
is, insofar as it messes with the whirlpool. External interference with
normal brain function is akin to a turbulent ow upstream.
