Take a typical adult human. Is her level of consciousness higher (or lower) when she is dreaming than when she is sitting at her desk after a heavy lunch, in a distracted semi-stupor? There are no straightforward answers to questions like these. Dreaming may be ‘more conscious’ in some ways (for example, the vividness of perceptual phenomenology) but ‘less conscious’ in others (for example, the degree of reflective insight into what is happening† ).
