BG7.5 Beyond matter lies My higher energy — the living soul, sustaining the world.

Bhagavad Gita 7.5 is a verse where Lord Krishna explains the distinction between His lower (material) and higher (spiritual) energies. Here’s the verse in Sanskrit with translation and explanation:

Sanskrit (Devanagari):

अपरेयम् इतस्त्वन्यां प्रकृतिं विद्धि मे पराम् ।

जीवभूतां महाबाहो ययेदं धार्यते जगत् ॥ ७.५ ॥

Transliteration:

apareyam itas tv anyāṁ prakṛitiṁ viddhi me parām

jīva-bhūtāṁ mahā-bāho yayedaṁ dhāryate jagat

Translation (general):

“But know, O mighty-armed Arjuna, that besides this [lower nature], I have another, higher nature. It is the living entities, by which the universe is sustained.”

Explanation:

  • In 7.4, Krishna describes His aparā-prakṛti (lower nature) — the eightfold material energy (earth, water, fire, air, ether, mind, intelligence, and ego).
  • In 7.5, He contrasts this with His parā-prakṛti (higher nature) — the jīva-śakti, or the living beings (souls).
  • The material energy is inert, but when combined with the spiritual energy (jīvas), the world becomes animated.
  • Thus, the jīvas are eternal parts of Krishna, superior to matter, and the sustaining force of the cosmos.

👉 Do you want me to also show you the commentaries of Acharyas (like Śaṅkara, Rāmānuja, Madhva, or Prabhupāda) on this verse for deeper insight?
