Karma is the holding on. Karma phalanx is the suffering

Praise be to Nisargadatta Maharaj, great mystic of Bharat! Outwardly he looked like a common householder and

spoke only his native language, Marathi, but the wisdom of

his spontaneous utterances was the same as the wisdom

found in the Vedas and the Upanishads. He was a shining

example of one who is in the consummate state of Eternal

Awareness. To a sincere seeker—one wanting to meet a living

talks, Maharaj narrated that that afternoon he was actually witnessing his own death, and that it was a most ecstatic moment. The daily routine of Maharaj for several years now has been simple and regular: dialogues with visitors morning and

afternoon, for about 90 minutes each time, and Bhajans four


times a day, in accordance with his Guru's instructions. Dur-

ing the talks/dialogues, the gathering these days normally


consists of about twenty persons, increasing to perhaps

thirty-five on Sundays and holidays to fill the small area to

capacity. Quite a few are usually foreigners who have come

from long distances, not as tourists but specifically "to get

his darshan" and listen to his talks, because after reading I Am That they could not resist the desire to meet him. Some
