CDS 051209-DARIERS DIS IN DRGAPR-UFTOE STRGGL

////////////////Dalit killed for coming to wedding uninvited

Patna, 4 DEC: In yet another brutal display of medieval attitudes, a Dalit youth of the Mushar community was tortured, hurled filthy abuses and then had his body sprayed with bullets at a village in Bihar. His fault? The victim had encroached upon the marriage function of an upper caste villager and dared to sit on a chair with them, violating the social “status code”, to watch the musical programme organised on the occasion to entertain the guests.
According to police, a musical programme had been organized at Salempur village under Isuapur police station in Saran district on late Wednesday night during the marriage of an upper caste villager to entertain the guests. Reports said after seeing the colourful extravaganza, a Dalit youth from a neighbouring village could not resist the temptation and occupied a chair with the guests to enjoy the show. However, his presence at their function and the way he dared to sit on the chair infuriated the groom’s family so much so that they kept pumping bullets into him until he breathed his last.
“The groom’s family asked the youth to reveal his identity and when coming to know that he is from the low caste, they fired shots at him. He died on the spot,” the local district superintendent of police, Chapra, Dr Kamal Kishore Singh told The Statesman over phone today. According to the SP, the victim had arrived at the marriage venue uninvited and dared to sit with them on a chair which apparently infuriated the groom’s side. “It’s a heinous crime and the police are not going to spare any of the accused”, the SP said adding a case of murder had registered some persons, including the groom’s father Mr Harendra Sharma.
