PFC MATURES BY 25

The prefrontal cortex, which is the part of the brain associated with emotional maturity, does not fully develop in humans until they are in their mid-20s. This may be because the prefrontal cortex, though it brings emotional balance, focus, planning and efficient action, restricts a person from the most creative aspects of learning:

So the apparent protection afforded by high fiber diets may derive from whole food plant-based nutrition rather than the fiber itself (so fiber supplements would not be expected to provide the same protection).

people’s “glycan age” with known markers for health deterioration, such as insulin, glucose, BMI and cholesterol, they found that those who scored poorly on these markers also had an older glycan age.
“Your glycan age seems to reflect how much inflammation is occurring in the body,” says Lauc. Prolonged inflammation can make cells deteriorate faster, so having an accelerated glycan age could be used as an early warning signal that your health is at risk, he says.

A new idea suggests ageing is a byproduct of how energy intensive it is for our bodies to repair faults”

The most widely cited theory of ageing is that telomeres, genetic caps on the ends of chromosomes, grow shorter each time a cell divides – like a wick burning on a candle. Once these are used up, the cell withers and dies. But a new idea gaining ground suggests ageing is instead a byproduct of how energy intensive it is for our bodies to continuously repair faults that occur in our DNA as cells divide. “It doesn’t make evolutionary sense to maintain that process for ever,” says Kirkwood. Indeed, several animal studies have shown that genes that affect lifespan do so by altering cells’ repair mechanisms. Little by little, faults build up in cells and tissues and cause us to deteriorate.

The monasteries had become very rich by the time the Ottoman Turks captured Thessaloniki in 1430. The communities offered to submit to Turkish overlordship if they were allowed to keep their properties and revenues, paying an annual tribute in return.2 Initially Turkish demands for tribute led to monastic impoverishment. Such was the threat from pirates, however, that from the end of the fifteenth century and through the sixteenth any revenues available were spent on the building of substantial fortifications round every monastery, by strengthening existing fortifications or by the addition of walls and towers.3

Although the border between England and Scotland was fixed by treaty in 1237, it proved difficult to defend or police. Warfare and raiding, by both sides, became commonplace for centuries. For the agriculturists of the lowlands and the pastoralists of the highland Cheviot Hills life was, at best, difficult and precarious. For centuries they had to contend with both English and Scottish armies, followed in the high Middle Ages by the Border reavers, the feared and lawless bands of cattle-rustlers who owed allegiance to nobody but themselves

PROLETARIAT

the proletariat, ‘alone is a really revolutionary class’.31 It is to capitalism as the bourgeoisie was to feudalism: The weapons with which the bourgeoisie felled feudalism to the ground are now turned against the bourgeoisie itself. But not only has the bourgeoisie forged the weapons that bring death to itself; it has also called into existence the men who are to wield those weapons – the modern working class – the proletarians.32

FXS X ANXTY- NEEDS SSRI?

Many patients with FXS begin to show signs of anxiety at a very early age, often by 2‐4 years. Serotonin is one of the most important neurotransmittersin the brain involved in regulating mood and affect. The selective serotonin re‐uptake inhibitors (SSRIs) can be very effective in treating these symptoms. They have been used on an empirical basis in affected patients as young as 4 years old. SSRIs are the treatment of choice for symptoms of anxiety and depression. In the FXS population, antidepressants, particularly SSRIs are somewhat helpful

Hubris syndrome,” Owen writes, “is a disorder of the possession of power.

Hubris syndrome,” as he and a co-author, Jonathan Davidson, defined it in a 2009 article published in Brain, “is a disorder of the possession of power, particularly power which has been associated with overwhelming success, held for a period of years and with minimal constraint on the leader.” Its 14 clinical features include: manifest contempt for others, loss of contact with reality, restless or reckless actions, and displays of incompetence. In May, the Royal Society of Medicine co-hosted a conference of the Daedalus Trust—an organization that Owen founded for the study and prevention of hubris.

APHANTASIA

The inability to create mental images of any sort is an exceptionally rare condition very recently dubbed by Dr. Adam Zeman as aphantasia. One sufferer of the condition, Tom Ebeyer, notes that "It had a serious emotional impact. I began to feel isolated – unable to do something so central to the average human experience. The ability to recall memories and experiences, the smell of flowers or the sound of a loved one's voice; before I discovered that recalling these things was humanly possible [at age 21], I wasn't even aware of what I was missing out on."  What causes this condition is currently unknown.
