Physical pain is processed in a similar way by the brain as social pain.
Swearing can reduce all types of pain, whether it is physical pain or the social pain from ostracism or embarrassment.
However, the swear words must be real swear words, new research finds.
Made-up swear word like “twizpipe” and “fouch” will not work.
Shouting out real swear words reduces the experience of pain by one-third and the tolerance of pain by the same amount, researchers found.
People find “twizpipe” and “fouch” funnier but they do not affect people’s experience of pain.
