Practice this skill of
metacognition by asking yourself questions while studying similar to
the ones listed below:
● Does this subject connect well to another domain of knowledge that is
related or unrelated? If you’re reading about ethics, think about
how that might play a role in your business
.
● Where else have I come across this idea? If you’re studying
economics and see that most models assume humans to be a
rational, utility-maximizing entity, you might realize that
you’ve come across this notion of humans being rational entities
in the history of Enlightenment.
● How difficult was it for me to grasp this? Say you struggled to
understand how voting behavior works in a democracy. If that’s
the case, you’ll likely have difficulty transferring your learning
here to other domains. As such, keep asking yourself this
question, and if the answer is “more than normal,” spend more
time studying the concept.
● Can I break this down into smaller parts? Say a person wants to
learn graphic design. Instead of trying to learn all they can
about this one big topic, they can instead break it down into
smaller parts and learn about them individually to better
understand graphic design as a whole.
● How would I explain this to a child? This is an excellent way to
gauge how well you know something. Imagine yourself trying
gauge how well you know something. Imagine yourself trying to
explain what you’ve learned to a five-year-old and see how well
you do. If you succeed, you’ve grasped your content well.
● Why is this important to know? This question will help you connect
your content with other similar topics. You might be studying
law to get a better idea of the norms and rules that govern your
society, or biology to know how our bodies work. Use such
reasons to connect these to other disciplines.
● What questions does this raise for me? If you get into the habit of
constantly questioning what you’re learning, it’ll help you see
how your knowledge is connected to other things in the world.
So after studying Freudian theory you might wonder why it
doesn’t discuss women much, or what basis is there for his
structural model, etc.
● What, if anything, surprises me about this? This question is a good
way to develop curiosity for the content you’re studying. For
example, if you’re learning theology, you might be surprised by
any number of lines in the religious texts you encounter. Dispel
those doubts through additional research, and try to connect
the answers you find with other, unrelated domains of
knowledge.

The inanimate world we see around us is the extrinsic appearance of these thoughts. The living organisms we share the world with are the extrinsic appearances of other dissociated 'alters.
