Neti Neti bhabitam

“Neti Neti” (नेति नेति) is a Sanskrit expression meaning “Not this, not this” or “Neither this, nor that.” It is a powerful concept from Advaita Vedanta, a non-dualistic school of Hindu philosophy.

Meaning and Context:

“Neti Neti” is used in the practice of self-inquiry or jnana yoga to help a seeker realize the true Self (Atman) by negating all that is not the Self.

When you say “Neti Neti bhavitam,” you’re likely referring to the contemplative practice (bhavana or bhavitam) of applying “Neti Neti”—a meditation or discernment process where you continuously discard everything that is not your true Self:

  • Body? Neti – not the Self.
  • Mind? Neti – not the Self.
  • Thoughts, emotions, memories, roles? Neti – not the Self.

Eventually, through this process of negation, what remains is the unchanging, eternal awareness—Brahman, the true Self.
