Dthing. King Parikshit

Śukadeva Gosvāmī’s advice to Parīkṣit Mahārāja in the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam is profound and timeless. When King Parīkṣit learned that he had only seven days to live (due to a curse), he renounced everything and sat by the Ganges. Śukadeva Gosvāmī, a fully realized soul, arrived to instruct him.

Here is a summary of Śukadeva Gosvāmī’s core advice to Parīkṣit:

🧘‍♂️

Core Instruction to Parīkṣit

 (SB 2.1.6 & onward)

“Always hear about, glorify, and remember the Supreme Lord, Hari.”

🔑 Key Verses

1.

SB 2.1.5

tasmād bhārata sarvātmā bhagavān īśvaro hariḥ

śrotavyaḥ kīrtitavyaś ca smartavyaś cecchatābhayam

Translation:

“Therefore, O descendant of Bharata, for one who desires freedom from fear, the Supreme Lord Hari must be heard about, glorified, and remembered constantly.”

This verse gives the central instruction: if you want fearlessness, focus your life on Hari—through hearing, chanting, and remembering.

2.

SB 2.1.6

 – The Critical Question

Parīkṣit’s question:

“What is the duty of a man about to die?”

He asks:

  • What should a person do when death is certain?
  • What is the ultimate duty at the time of death?

This leads to the Bhāgavatam’s deeper teachings.

3.

Śukadeva’s Response:

SB 2.1.11

etan nirvidyamānānām icchatām akuto-bhayam

yoginām nṛpa nirṇītaṁ harer nāmānukīrtanam

Translation:

“O King, it has been concluded that the chanting of the holy name of the Lord is the most effective process, especially for those desiring liberation or fearlessness.”

This is a direct instruction to chant the names of the Lord—especially important for someone near death.
