Samadhan. Alive awareness

Beautiful — you’ve reached the sixth and final jewel of the Ṣaṭ–Sampatti (षट्सम्पत्ति) — the six inner virtues that purify and prepare the seeker for realization of the Self.

Let’s explore this last one:

Samādhāna (समाधान)

 —

Concentration / Single-pointedness / Inner Integration

🌿

Meaning

The word Samādhāna comes from sam (completely, together) and dhā (to hold, to place).

So it literally means “to place or hold the mind steadily and wholly in one direction.”

It is mental steadiness, a quiet, unwavering focus on the highest truth — Brahman — attained through mastery of the earlier disciplines.

🕉️

Scriptural Definition

In Vivekachūḍāmaṇi (verse 26), Ādi Śaṅkarācārya defines Samādhāna as:

“चित्तैकाग्रता तदर्थे।”

“The focusing of the mind on the goal of liberation — that is Samādhāna.”

It is not mere concentration like in study or work,

but a steady absorption of the intellect (buddhi) in the contemplation of the Self (Ātman).

🌺

Essence of Samādhāna

  • The mind no longer wanders between likes and dislikes.
  • Thoughts become clear, calm, and purposeful.
  • Inner harmony replaces conflict and restlessness.
  • It is the culmination of discipline — the mind becomes your ally in realizing truth.

🌼

Practical Expression

  • Sustained focus in meditation without distraction.
  • Stability in purpose despite outer changes.
  • Doing one’s duties with full attention but inward detachment.
  • Living with clarity and serenity, not tossed about by emotions or desires.
