/////////////////..........As a trainee Home Inspector I just wanted to say that the mandatory Home Condition Report, which the govt made voluntary last July as part of the HIP includes an assessment of the services including the electrics. We are not electricians but if we see poor or outdated installations we report on them. The Mortgage Valuation or Homebuyer survey do not do this so hence why the original poster had to be nagged by Dad to do something. So if you are selling a house after June get an HCR to reassure your buyers that the house is in good order. If you are buying a house ask the vendor to commission an HCR and save yourself the cost of paying for the inferior Homebuyer Survey.

The guys that did the job, based in North London, did an absolutely fantastic job & were very cheap! I paid £4,000 in London for a full electric rewire which included extra sockets & lighting in the loft, replastering & working in an occupied house which meant putting everything in a working state at the end of each day. It was the cheapest quote out of 4 which I obtained.

////////////////////...........Well I think the 17th edition of the wiring regs states that everyone should have a consumer unit with RCD. So it will be compulsary soon. And yes it can save your life as long as wired correctly and proper earthing taken care of. I would also recommend reutine maintenance. the 5-10yr thing is too long. A lot of cable damage is causedby rats mice and squirrels getting into lofts and in floor space they chew the cables. There is no guarantee they are not eating away as we speak. I think people should treat there homes and safety with more respect than there car that goes down in price have an annual inspection. People should also allow for the price of all the main earthing to be renewed at the same time as the consumer unit. Copper cable does not come cheap. This adds extra cost ontop and is compulsary to have done I believe. Then full test certificates must be provided. If this is not provided dont pay because the tradesman is breaking the law. The price of a consumer unit usually varies from the amount of ways. i.e. 10 way 12 way etc and they have to carry out a full electrical test to put on the schedule of results they issue you with so that adds to the price also the notification fee via the scheme provider i.e. NICEIC so if the price seems high its because there are a lot of overheads and liability in form of insurance to cover. Tools are expensive also and a test meter to carry out the test is 1000 pounds.

OCCASIONAL NOTE Are Beri-Beri and Epidemic Dropsy, both of which have recently been prominent in Calcutta and Howrah, one and the same disease? Dr Frederick Pearse, the health officer of Calcutta, writing in the April number of the Indian Medical Gazette, expresses the opinion that there are strong grounds for holding that such is the case. Epidemic Dropsy, which was first described in 1877 on the strength of a few cases; has reappeared locally during the past few months, and at the same time there has occurred the outbreak of Beri-Beri at the Alipore Reformatory. In the absence of any positive or negative bacteriological evidence, Dr Pearse falls back upon a comparison of the courses and symptoms of the two diseases, and he states that thee is a considerable proportion of cases in a Beri-Beri outbreak which would be absolutely indistinguishable from so-called Epidemic Dropsy. In addition there is absolutely nothing known connected with the causation of either disease which tends to distinguish them. They are both essentially household diseases, there is little fever present in either, and when it is present it does not pursue any regular course. The combination of symptoms in the two complaints is, further, very similar. Finally, death is brought about in a similar manner, and the sum of all these considerations, the details of which are very fully discussed in Dr Pearse’s paper, leads him to the belief that we shall have to look to somp one specific microbe as the cause of the diseases.

/////////////////..............I've read a few posts and have some advice for you. I have been working in the electricity industry for years in all sorts of roles and a lot of the points you have been making are heard day in day out. 1 - Don't underestimate the limited training offered to those you speak to. Often call centres are trained in a general way so they have very limited knowledge and only learn by experience. Back office staff are often more specialised and when you speak to them they will be more efficient at sorting your billing concerns. So, fight to get to the right people! 2 - Whenever you move house or change suppliers you MUST take your meter readings. Suppliers really on poor estimates based on (in the case of the company I worked for) very basic calculations that continue to estimate based on even a previous customers usage until readings catch up. 3 - Never let them bill you estimates, supply your COR (Customer Own Readings) This will keep your bill correct, stop your direct debit falling too low or too high and make your reading history as accurate as can be. This means any estimates will also be spot on. 4 - Always check that your readings have been billed the correct way round if you have a multiregister meter. Transposition is often the reason you see an OAP receiving a bill for £3000! Suppliers have thresholds for diverting bills in for checking but then it's over to the human beings and dispute the most obvious system errors you would be surpised how many bills still go out due to staff making mistakes. 5 - If you think you are being billed to much take your readings 7 days apart and then try to calculate your bill for an estimate usage. It'show it's done on the 1st instance by a suplplier when you raise this issue.6 - Don't be fobbed of with an energy efficieny booklet. It's often the 1st thing they will send you but more often than not, if you bill have jumped or you have moved into a similiar premise and had a large jump it will be a billing problem. Any of the points above can cause over billing and it happens to people all the time, everyday. For instance, you move into property and your starting reading from your moving in date is based on an estimate but in your 1st quarter you get sent a bill for £700. You know it's wrong but you can't see whats on the suppliers system. This may have been caused by the supplier's underbillign of the previous customer. A good supplier should NEVER send you a boklet about saving power without checking your bill and any previous customer, change of supplier event or readigs received by their Agents or customers against the property. Honestly, most energy investigations don't yield faulty meters or even a ustomers massive usage, it usually incorrect billing records. I've noticed comments on even using 34 units a day in a house. Unless your very lucky in that by house you mean mansion or you've got something massive plugged in like large spotlights, you won't ever come close to this. Take it from me, it will be poor records with your supplier!!!When I first started in this industry these queries were coming through all the time and most were resolved in 10 minutes after spotting the problem. Very few continue to the energy efficiency side. There are a whole lot of procedures from there, not just a booklet. You can have the suppliers energy efficiency people come out to you, you could request a check meter to make sure your meter is running at the correct speed, you could have a standard load test to see if it's faulty or even have it referred for a meter examiner visit which is an independant check by a representative of Energywatch which is the final check. Remember, be firm!!!

This leads us to the larger question of how Buddhism might be applied to a political crisis. Arsole
Yes, believe it or not, there is actually a molecule called Arsole... and it's a ring! It is the arsenic equivalent of pyrrole, and although it is rarely found in its pure form, it is occasionally seen as a sidegroup in the form of organic arsolyls. For more information, see the paper with probably the best title of any scientific paper I've ever come across: "Studies on the Chemistry of the Arsoles", G. Markl and H. Hauptmann, J. Organomet. Chem., 248 (1983) 269. Contrary to popular belief, new research (see reference below) shows that arsoles are only moderately aromatic... Incidentally US patent number US 3 412 119 by the Dow Chemical Company is entitled 'Substituted Stannoles, Phospholes, Arsoles, and Stiboles' - I didn't know there was a substitute for an arsole...Furthermore, the structure where arsole is fused to a benzene ring is called 'benzarsole', and apparently when it's fused to 6 benzenes it would be called 'sexibenzarsole' (although that molecule hasn't been synthesised yet). Another well known poisonous arsenic molecule is the simple hydride, called 'arsine', with formula AsH3.And on a related theme, I've been told of an Aryl Selenide compound with the superb shorthand of ArSe, which is both toxic and smelly. The paper it comes from in J. Am. Chem. Soc. was published by authors from, of course, the University of Aarhus! Also, the related molecule phosphole (which just replaces As with P) is quite amusing if you are a French speaker, since it's pronounced the same as 'fausse folle'. Fausse means 'fake' or 'false', and folle means both a 'crazy woman' and a 'drag-queen' or 'ladyboy'.
