NEGATIVE CAL FOODS

///////////////////Negative Calorie Foods: 15 Foods That Actually Burn More Calories Than They Contain

By Laura Milligan
No, we’re not advocating the battle to see how few calories you can consume each day or promoting crash diets in any form or function; however, if you’re a snack-o-holic who can’t stop munching and crunching in between meals, try snacking on one of these negative calorie foods instead of gobbling down a cupcake or big bag of chips. Your body can burn more calories just by chewing and processing the snack than the food contains already. In other words, you’ll be able to keep eating throughout the day without packing on extra pounds.
Celery: A staple on most party veggie trays, celery (without the ranch dressing) is a crispy snack that you can enjoy without worrying about taking in any calories. It is high in sugar and sodium, but still much healthier than pigging out on brownies or salty peanuts.
Oranges: Before you leave for work in the morning, toss an orange into your bag for a mid-morning or late afternoon snack. An orange typically contains only 45 calories, so feel free to eat the whole thing!
Strawberries: Strawberries are a popular negative calorie food because of their natural sweetness and juiciness. Sprinkle a few on your breakfast cereal to give your metabolism an extra jumpstart early in the day.
Tangerines: A smaller, more tart version of the orange, tangerines are another negative calorie food that’s both tasty and portable. Enjoy one or two for a snack throughout the day to stimulate your taste buds without having to dig through the candy drawer.
Grapefruit: As big as it is, grapefruit –without the extra sugar on top– is a surprisingly negative calorie food. One-half of a grapefruit only contains 36 calories but a whopping 78% of your daily value of potassium.
Carrots: Carrots don’t just make your eyes sparkle; they also let you snack guilt-free. Snack on baby carrots instead of chips and salsa while you make dinner, or keep a bag in your office refrigerator when you feel the need to eat due to stress.
Apricots: Indulge in nutrient-rich apricots for a sweet snack with negative calories. Your higher metabolism and thinning waistline will thank you.
Lettuce: There’s a dirty little rumor in the magazine industry that the girls at Vogue keep lettuce in their desks to snack on when the hunger pains strike, but they can’t afford to compromise their stick thin figures. We’re guessing you’re not about to go through the day dizzy with starvation, but you can make yourself a hearty salad with lots of lettuce (and other negative calorie veggies!) once you get home. Don’t forget to take it easy on the dressing.
Tomatoes: Chop up a tomato to give your sandwich, salad or egg whites omelet extra flavor without adding any calories.
Cucumbers: Your salad can’t survive on lettuce alone. Cucumbers are another negative calorie food that are great for crunching on when your mouth is getting bored. Check here for tips on growing your own cucumbers.
Watermelon: A traditional summertime treat, enjoying a watermelon is almost fun and delicious as eating candy because of its super sweet, super juicy nature. Plus, you’ll burn off all the calories crunching, digesting, and of course, spitting out the seeds.
Cauliflower: Another party platter vegetable, raw cauliflower is naturally low in fat and of course, calories, so don’t be shy about piling up your cocktail napkin.
Apples: An apple a day keeps the doctor away, but when eaten as a snack instead of candy bars or chips, apples will also keep the calories at bay. With only 81 calories per apple, your body also works a lot harder and longer to digest the fruit many other snack options.
Hot Chili Peppers: Excess seasonings and dressings pile on lots of fat and calories to otherwise healthy meals. To avoid gaining weight simply because you’re a condiments junkie, experiment with more natural seasonings like hot chili peppers, which is a negative calorie food.
Zucchini: Zucchini is a versatile, negative calorie food that can be baked, steamed, fried (not recommended), or prepared in many other ways. With just 15 calories per 100g, make zucchini your new diet staple.

100 YEARS AGO TODAY
News Items SPITTING ON A DURWAN Conviction Upheld By The High Court Justices Rampini and Sharfuddin at the High Court disposed of the rule issued on behalf of Mr Gallo calling upon the Chief Presidency Magistrate to show cause why the conviction and sentence passed upon the petitioner should not be set aside. The petitioner and the complainant, a durwan, had a quarrel, and on the day of the occurrence the petitioner took objection to the conduct of the durwan, who retorted rather strongly, whereupon the petitioner spat on the latter's face. The petitioner was placed on his trial before a bench of Honorary Magistrates, presided over by Mr Shirley Tremearne. The Court found the accused guilty and sentenced him to pay a fine of Rs 200. Against this conviction and sentence the rule was obtained. Mr Stokes, who appeared with Mr Chippendale in support of the rule, urged that the act was done under grave and sudden provocation and that the sentence was too severe. Mr Justice Sharfuddin remarked that spitting on the face if a Rajput durwan was not a slight offence as suggested by counsel. Again, the durwan had to suffer some expenditure on his account, for certainly he had to undergo the "pryaschita" (purification) ceremony. Their Lordships saw no reason to interfere, and accordingly discharged the rule.

//////////////////////Tesla Roadsterby Ross Bonander, Contributing Writer
Type: 100% fully electric (BEV)Class: Sports car
Manufacturer: Tesla Motors The Manufacturer Says...“The Tesla Roadster … is six times as efficient and produces one-tenth the pollution, all while achieving the same performance and acceleration” compared against other sports cars. The Critics Say...“The Tesla … is the first car that means we as sports car aficionados can see beyond the end of the internal combustion engine.” – Jay Leno, reviewing for Times Online. OverviewIn the realm of electric cars—actually, in the realm of automotive transportation—the Tesla Roadster is a quantum leap forward, combining the breathtaking beauty of a classic roadster with advanced technology to make her agile and responsive, green and efficient… and tons more fun than any previous vehicle of its kind, along with a number of well-established sports cars as well. What We Like• The body. From virtually any angle, this is a hot, dynamic-looking sports car. • The cockpit. It is streamlined to offer only the necessities without added clutter. • The motor. Its motor consists of one moving part—the rotor. Compare this to the moving parts in a four-cylinder engine (over 100). • The performance. 0-60 in under 4 seconds using a 2-speed manual transmission without a clutch pedal, reaching an eletrically limited top speed of 125 mph. • The battery system. Almost 7,000 lithium-ion batteries, coupled with Tesla software, are fully charged in four hours and provide, in sum, a 245 mil driving range. Regenerative braking technology extends the charge, and the trunk can feature a mobile-charging kit that allows recharging from any standard electrical outlet. Furthermore, Tesla has partnered with an installer of solar panels, allowing owners to use solar energy to charge not only their home, but by extension, their Roadster as well. The result is a 100% emissions-free vehicle that uses only renewable energy. What We Don’t Like• The $100,000 price tag. If you can afford it, cost-benefit analyses don’t matter. If you really can’t, you’re better off financially in buying a variety of other vehicles, including a number of hybrids. • The servicing plan. The manufacturer does not recommend you bring the car anywhere but to one of their stores for any servicing needs. In other words, owners don’t have a choice and there’s no competition, meaning owners must pay what Tesla charges. Whether outside serving will be covered by the warranty is at present unknown. ConclusionThere’s no getting around the fact that the Roadster is priced well beyond the budget of the average consumer. Yet new and exciting technologies like this are typically first introduced to wealthier clientele, largely because these innovations require hundreds of millions of dollars and years to develop. They aren’t likely to roll off the assembly line in reach of the average joe. The Roadster itself is unlikely to change the face of the automotive industry, but what it signifies may be more important: if Tesla succeeds with the Roadster, they can more confidently move ahead with plans to develop two vehicles aimed for smaller budgets. Numerous other fledgling car companies have turned up dead because they can not afford to stay afloat in such a supremely costly, slow-paced business as this one, loaded with so many regulations. But if Tesla can fully deliver the Roadster, and if the Roadster delivers on its many promises, Tesla stands a fighting chance to alter the entire industry.

Mediterranean diet cuts mortality rates, says study

Sarah Boseley, health editor
The Guardian,
Tuesday December 11 2007
Consuming a Mediterranean diet can make you live longer, according to a major study published today.
Eating plenty of fruit, vegetables and fish instead of meat, not to mention olive oil rather than saturated fats, is generally accepted to be good for you, but only a few studies have attempted to work out whether such a diet would help people to live longer. The study, published today in Archives of Internal Medicine, confirms that among nearly 400,000 retired Americans, the closer they stuck to a Mediterranean diet, the lower their likelihood of death over a five-year period.
More than 200,000 men and 160,000 women took part in the study. They were asked to fill in detailed questionnaires on their eating habits and other matters relating to their health, such as whether they smoked, their weight and their age.
Each person was given a score according to how closely they followed one of two diet patterns. The first was a traditional Mediterranean diet - eating vegetables (excluding potatoes), fruits and nuts, beans, grains and fish. They scored more points for eating less saturated fat, having a low consumption of meat and dairy products and for drinking a moderate amount of alcohol each day - between five and 25g for women and 10 to 50g for men.
They were also assessed on an alternate Mediterranean diet score, which included only whole grains, separated fruit and nuts into two groups, eliminated dairy products, deducted points only for red and processed meats and allowed equal amounts of alcohol for men and women - but the results were the same.
During the first five years of the study, there were 12,105 deaths. Of those, 5,985 people died of cancer and 3,451 died of heart disease.
The researchers found that "higher conformity with the Mediterranean dietary pattern was associated with a statistically significant reduction in all-cause mortality, including mortality due to cancer and cardiovascular disease in both men and women".
Women who stuck most closely to the alternate Mediterranean diet had a 22% smaller chance of dying from any cause, a 14% smaller chance of dying from cancer and a 21% smaller chance of dying from heart disease. The findings for men followed a similar pattern.
When the researchers looked at the smokers who took part in the study, they found that they gained significantly from a Mediterranean diet. The association "appeared to be more pronounced among smokers and especially among smokers with normal BMI (18.5-25)," wrote the authors, Panagiota Mitrou, then of the National Cancer Institute but now at Cambridge University, and colleagues. BMI is a measurement of obesity, calculated by weight and height.
The study found that the only people who failed to benefit from the diet were those who were obese. The authors said this finding, and that relating to smokers, should be further investigated. They said they believed their study was the first to look at the impact on death rates of a Mediterranean-type diet in the US population and suggested the key features of the diet "may have a substantial beneficial impact on mortality".
In children, a diet rich in fish, olive oil and vegetables can cut asthma and other respiratory conditions, according to a European study by researchers from the UK's National Heart and Lung Institute.

//////////////////////Descartes's physical theory of the universe, embodying most of the results contained in his earlier and unpublished Le Monde, is given in his Principia, 1644, and rests on a metaphysical basis. He commences with a discussion on motion; and then lays down ten laws of nature, of which the first two are almost identical with the first two laws of motion as given by Newton; the remaining eight laws are inaccurate. He next proceeds to discuss the nature of matter which he regards as uniform in kind though there are three forms of it. He assumes that the matter of the universe must be in motion, and that the motion must result in a number of vortices. He states that the sun is the centre of an immense whirlpool of this matter, in which the planets float and are swept round like straws in a whirlpool of water. Each planet is supposed to be the centre of a secondary whirlpool by which its satellites are carried: these secondary whirlpools are supposed to produce variations of density in the surrounding medium which constitute the primary whirlpool, and so cause the planets to move in ellipses and not in circles. All these assumptions are arbitrary and unsupported by any investigation. It is not difficult to prove that on his hypothesis the sun would be in the centre of these ellipses, and not at a focus (as Kepler had shewn was the case), and that the weight of a body at every place on the surface of the earth except the equator would act in a direction which was not vertical; but it will be sufficient here to say that Newton in the second book of his Principia, 1687, considered the theory in detail, and shewed that its consequences are not only inconsistent with each of Kepler's laws and with the fundamental laws of mechanics, but are also at variance with the laws of nature assumed by Descartes. Still, in spite of its crudeness and its inherent defects, the theory of vortices marks a fresh era in astronomy, for it was an attempt to explain the phenomena of the whole universe by the same mechanical laws which experiment shews to be true on the earth.

Angel on the Sceneby Alisha
When I had just graduated high school, I would drive out to my grandmother's house every night and stay with her because she was ill. I lived in Kent, Washington and I would drive to Enumclaw after work. The road that I took has a 50 mile-an-hour speed limit and no street lights. Being as I drove this every night, I know my cell phone doesn't receive service though that stretch and I am a very cautious driver and ALWAYS locked my doors.
On this night in 2001, I was making the drive as normal when the car in front of me slammed on their brakes (I guess they missed their turn). When I slammed on my brakes, my wheel locked and I couldn't slow down... I rear-ended the car going 50 mph. The accident was really bad -- the whole front of my little Saturn was caved in up to the steering wheel and my air bag didn't deploy, so my head was slammed into the steering wheel. I was trapped in my car and my head was bleeding. Just then my car door opened (and like I said I ALWAYS lock my doors), and a black gentleman was there. He said, "Alisha, you're going to be ok. Please let me have your phone and I will call your mom." So I gave him my cell, thinking to myself that it's not going to work because of the area we're in... and how did he know my name? The gentleman called my mom and I heard him say, "Alisha was in a car accident. She will be fine. You need to come and be with her though." He told her the road I was on and hung up. Then he held my hand and told me, "You're going to be alright. It's not your time to go yet." I knew the moment he held my hand that I was ok and I felt a peace come over me. Then I heard the sirens from the fire trucks and the gentleman said, "It's my time to go. You'll be alright; just have faith." He left and the fireman came to check me out. They started asking me questions and asked me if they could call someone to meet me at the hospital. I told them that a black gentleman had already called and my mom was on her way. He told me that no one was around and checked my phone and said no call had been made. Just then my mom pulled up (in hysterics of course) and the fireman just looked at me.
I ended up ok. They transported me to the ER. I had cuts, black eyes and whip lash, and I couldn't walk for three days, but after some physical therapy I recovered like new. I later asked my mom about the gentleman that called. She told me that nothing registered on her caller ID when the call came through, and all she could tell me was the gentleman that called her sounded like a black man. So her phone never showed that a call came through, my phone never showed that a call went out, the doors of my car opened with out any prying, the gentleman knew my name and no one but me saw the man that sat with me. I know in my heart that I had my wonderful guardian angel with me that night. I also found out later that the car that I hit... no one was hurt in the vehicle and no one saw anyone at my car until the firemen came.

/////////////////////////change your thoughts=10 concentration exercises

A candle flame – sitting in front of a candle and concentrating on nothing but the flame for 5 – 10 minutes will enhance your powers of concentration considerably.
Stumbleupon – Stumbleupon 100 sites without stopping for a break. Great for traffic to your blog as well.
Have a freezing cold shower – One of my favourites. Have a freezing cold shower. To take your mind off the cold think of all the things you are grateful for in life and your mind will be taken off the fact that your bits are almost frozen solid.
Do one thing at a time – I have a huge problem with too much stuff going on in my head at once. I have so many ideas about different things it’s hard to concentrate. When I focus on one task at a time, it helps my concentration enormously.
Get rid of worrying thoughts – Sometimes as you are trying to concentrate on a task other worrying thoughts will pop into your head; like you remember you’ve got to pick up some work from the office, you’ve got a meeting at the school, etc. To get rid of these distractions write them down on a piece of paper. This way you do not dismiss the thought altogether and you are telling yourself it is important enough to write down.
Count from 100 backwards down to 1 – This may sound simple enough, and it is, however it takes a bit of concentration to do it.
Recall a photograph – Study a photograph, which is unfamiliar to you. Do this for 5 minutes and then try to recall as much as you can about the picture.
Spell words backwards – This is great for kids as well and has the added bonus of helping them to spell.
“I went to the shops and bought…..” – This is a great car game and is a great one for concentration.
Do mathematical calculations – When I am driving, I like to do some mathematical calculations in my head e.g. I have 20 miles to travel, I am travelling at an average speed of 50 miles per hour, how long will it take to get to my destination. Nothing huge but things like this are great for your concentration skills.

BEIJING: A Chinese woman has opened a mausoleum-themed inn to let people experience the feeling of death.
Jiao Meige set up the Mausoleum Inn in a house in Lishui town, Jiangsu province, reports the Jinling Evening Post.
The building is shaped like a Chinese mausoleum, and the beds are in the shapes of coffins. Jiao says the idea for the Mausoleum Inn came to her in a flash.
“Since there are so many graves, why don’t I give people a chance to experience death?” she asked.
“There are no services at night, and the guest can go nowhere, since outside is just a vast graveyard.” Jiao says no residents with heart problems will be accepted, and mental patients must be accompanied by healthy people.

What is that fine looking vehicle, you ask? Why, it is part of “China’s new fleet of mobile execution chambers.”
Makers of the death vans say the vehicles and injections are a civilized alternative to the firing squad, ending the life of the condemned more quickly, clinically and safely. The switch from gunshots to injections is a sign that China “promotes human rights now,” says Kang Zhongwen, who designed the Jinguan Automobile death van
