It so happened that I watched this right after watching The Man in the Iron Mask...and noticed several very similar things in both stories.... A King with an exact double (both characters played by the same actor), an unaware Princess (and Queen to Be) who is astonished by the alternating attitudes of the "King", in both films..the Queen eventually learns the truth. The rescuers of the imposter use a secret door in the Palace to escape in both films. Kidnapping and imprisonment of the real King. Of course, the evil rival to the throne (Prince Michael here, the Finance Minister Fouquet in the other), and fencing scenes. In both films the imposter is the more worthy or likeable character. Both films have scenes in the cathedral... which have the rivals questioning or pondering the legitimacy of the imposter. In both films the public never learns about all these strange events. I'm sure I'm forgetting other similarities.MOVIESTACK

The Prisoner of Zenda has more in common with The Prince and The Pauper. In Twain's story a poor child is identical with the prince of England. They are mistaken for one another and the real prince is thrown out on the streets of London where no one believes he's the prince, while the poor boy lives in the palace.
