When the clinical course and examination are not specific for a diagnosis, especially when considering sinusitis versus allergic rhinitis, a microscopic examination of the nasal secretions may be helpful. An eosin–methylene blue stain of these secretions can help to identify eosinophils, WBCs, and bacteria. A predominance of WBCs and bacteria suggests sinusitis, and at least 5% eosinophils suggests allergic rhinitis. The two diseases may occur together.
