BREATHING IN AND OUT 4 SEC COUNT

incredibly traumatic moment, Jake remembered a breathing technique he had learned. He had read a book for active service members (On Combat by Lieutenant Colonel Dave Grossman) that described “tactical breathing.” This exercise involves breathing in and out in a pattern of four-second counts and breath holds as a way to calm the adrenaline rush and fight-or-flight response. Remembering to breathe in this manner, Jake was able to keep his cool, to check on the well-being of his Marines, to ask his driver to send out a signal for help, to prop up his legs, to tourniquet them, and when all his responsibilities were met and he had ensured everyone’s safety, to lie down and rest as he waited for help to arrive. It was only then that he lost consciousness.
