The thematic conflict between passion and restraint can be seen with hot and cold imagery within the novel. At Gateshead, for example, the young Jane loses her temper with Mrs Reed, who has lied about her to Mr Brocklehurst. Mrs. Reed's ‘eye of ice’ symbolising a cold heart and a lack of compassion looks ‘freezingly’ at Jane. This contrasts with Jane’s description of herself as a ‘ridge of lighted heath, alive, glancing, devouring’. This triplet suggests life, movement and passion.
