Where knowledge comes from

One way to classify knowledge is by how we acquire it
Perceptual
The direct evidence of our senses
Testimonial
Facts we acquire from other people and media
Inner sense
Awareness of our own feelings and states, such as pain and hunger
Inferential
Knowledge we stitch together ourselves from raw inputs

Knowing something is a far richer, more complex state than merely believing it”

THE HAPPINESS OF PURSUIT

FAV FRTS AND VEG 800 GM PER DAY EQUALS 10 PORTIONS- 1 APPLE IS 180 GM

The researchers characterize 10 portions as 800 grams of fruits and vegetables a day. For context, one medium apple is around 182 grams.

The fruits and vegetables that were linked to lower risk of heart problems included the usual suspects like apples, citrus, and leafy veggies like spinach. Other cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and Brussels sprouts as well as peppers and green beans were linked to potentially lower cancer risk.

exercise combats stress. Exercise is a powerful way to combat feelings of stress because it causes immediate increases in levels of key neurotransmitters, including serotonin, noradrenalin, dopamine and endorphins, that are often depleted by anxiety and depression. That’s why going for a run or spending 30 minutes on the elliptical can boost our moods immediately—combatting the negative feelings we often associate with chronic stressors we deal with every day.

Copper was almost certainly the first metal to be used by humans; as it is such an unreactive chemical that it is one of the few metals that occurs naturally in its pure state. It is also very soft and malleable and so relatively easy to work into tools and weapons. When combined with another metallic element – tin – copper forms the alloy bronze; when combined with zinc it forms brass. Iron is, perhaps surprisingly, the most abundant element on Earth, and the fourth-most abundant element in the rocks of Earth’s crust. Although more difficult to extract and work with than bronze, iron is an excellent material for weapons manufacture as it is harder and lasts longer than bronze.

It is believed that copper was first mined and crafted by humans 11,000 years ago, and the specific characteristics of this metal ushered in a new age of technology and the transition from stone tools and weapons to metal ones. Four thousand years later it happened again but with iron which, even today, when mixed with carbon to form the alloy steel is the exoskeleton of industrial civilisation.

Starting with hydrogen and ending with plutonium, the first ninety-four elements of the Table have been found occurring naturally on Earth. These elements are nature’s building blocks; the remaining twenty-four elements, can only be created artificially and live for very short periods of time. Using these ninety-four elements you can explain all of biology and chemistry without knowing about the underlying structure of protons and neutrons, electrons and quarks. This is because you need very high energies and temperatures to break apart the elements – a condition that only exists naturally deep inside the stars.

In AD 185, Chinese astronomers witnessed a brightness in the sky comparable to that of Mars, and this remained for eight months. This phenomena was the first recorded occurrence of a supernova explosion, but it was not until late 2006 that the remains of this cosmic event were identified. This picture, taken by the Chandra X-ray Observatory, shows an object now known as RCW 86. The image shows low-, medium-and high-energy X-rays in red, green and blue respectively. It was the study of the distribution of X-rays with energy, combined with measuring the remnant’s size, that enabled scientists to conclude that RCW 86 was created by the explosion of a massive star around 8,000 light years away

At the Royal Institution in London, Michael Faraday was busy doing what scientists do best – playing around with wire and magnets. He discovered that if you push a magnet through a coil of wire, an electric current flows through the wire while the magnet is moving. This is a generator; the thing that sits in all power stations around the world today, providing us with electricity. Faraday wasn’t interested in inventing the foundation of the modern world, he just wanted to learn about electricity and magnetism.

HUMANS SLEEP LEAST AMONG PRIMATES

They argue that moving from the trees to the ground allowed our ancestors to sleep more deeply – "which could in turn have affected cognition", says Samson.
The theory goes that although we sleep for fewer hours than other primates, the sleep that we have is of high quality so we do not need as much.

Technological and cultural changes are beginning to transform our sense of self.

humans have the ability to perceive themselves as individuals, as part of groups, but also as “nobody.” Being “nobody” is, for instance, what we experience when we go out dancing and lose ourselves in the music, or when we immerse ourselves in an addictive TV series. The danger is that if we spend more time engaging with multimedia that lets us be nobody, we’ll lose our sense of individual and group identity.

It’s rather like a complex weather system that makes it hard to predict whether it’ll rain or shine in three weeks. The fact that we can’t predict this doesn’t mean that clouds have free will and are doing as they please though.

FREE WILL X TEA

The idea of life without free will is something that we instinctively disagree with. When we order a cup of tea, we think that we could have just as easily chosen a cappuccino instead. But this might not be true. It could be that because of your life experiences, the circumstances at the time and the particular feelings involved, choosing tea was inevitable..

According to philosopher Rom Harré, the Inuit have a less individualistic sense of self. This is reflected in the way their emotions are tied up with those around them. If the people in their community are sad, they tend to be sad too. If their community is rejoicing, they rejoice. Similarly, decisions are made from the perspective of the family or clan, not of the individual.

ALGAE FOR DIET

People are also starting to recognise the nutritional potential of algae, including seaweed. Some types, when dried, contain 70 per cent protein; others are packed with essential fatty acids. Seaweeds are abundant in micronutrients, too, from iron and zinc to potassium and calcium. There are more than 100,000 species of algae, yet we currently cultivate just 20, so there’s plenty of scope for expansion. A big advantage of algae is that its cultivation doesn’t require agricultural land: it can be done offshore or in places where the groundwater is salty, even in the Sahara.

HUMN DOMESTICN

As humans collected into ever larger groups, the discovery of increasingly complex technology was accelerated. In high-density settlements, artisans and innovators could specialize in their crafts and exchange ideas. Selection for tool development has had an associated pressure on our ability to co-exist peacefully in large numbers, and aggressive, uncooperative individuals may have been selected against. We’ve become, by most accounts, a gentler, more cooperative species over time. Our testosterone levels, for instance, appear to have dropped, judging by the brow size of our fossilized predecessors. Some scientists suggest that the emergence of complex human culture amounts to us having, effectively, domesticated ourselves.

AXIAL AGE NOT NECY SUCCESS

In the short run they usually failed: think of Jeremiah, Socrates, Confucius, Jesus. Buddhism fi nally disappeared in India, the Buddha’s home ground. Jaspers sums it up starkly: “Th e Axial Period too ended in failure. History went on.”  So breakthroughs were not only preceded by breakdowns, they were followed by breakdowns. History indeed. Th e insights, however, at least the ones we know of, survived. Th e very failures that followed them stimulated repeated eff orts to recover the initial insights, to realize the so far unrealized possibilities. It is this that has given such dynamism to the axial traditions. But important though these traditions are to us, and Weil reminds us that any talk of an axial age is culturally autobiographical— the axial age is axial because of what it has meant to us— these traditions give us no grounds for triumphalism. Th e failures have been many and it is hard to gauge the successes. It is hard to say that we today, particularly today, are living up to the insights of the great axial prophets and sages. But it is time to take a closer look.

CHIMPE EGALITE

De Waal fi nds that, especially among primates, dominance hierarchies are variable in their degree of despotism. Rhesus monkeys, for example, are despotic, and any challenge from below is severely punished. Chimpanzees, however, are quite diff erent: “Even though we cannot go so far as to call chimpanzees egalitarian, the species has certainly moved away from despotism toward a social arrangement with room for sharing, tolerance, and alliances from below. Although high- ranking individuals have disproportionate privileges and infl uence, dominance also depends to some degree on ac ceptance from below.”  It is even possible for a co ali tion of females to oppose an alpha male who is acting too harshly, and, because other males have their own reasons not to come to his rescue and females are large and strong enough that several of them can subdue a single male, the alpha has little choice but to back down.

NO CONDS TO FULFILL

There are no conditions to fulfill. There is nothing to be done, nothing to be given up. Just look and remember, whatever you perceive is not you, nor yours. It is there in the field of consciousness, but you are not the field and its contents, not even the knower of the field. It is your idea that you have to do things that entangle you in the results of your efforts - the motive, the desire, the failure to achieve, the sense of frustration - all this holds you back. Simply look at whatever happens and know that you are beyond it.”

GOULD X BUSH OF BIOLF

So we learn that not only is our sun a minor star in a not very interesting galaxy nowhere near the center of anything, but that our species, of which we are so justly proud, is far from the center of the biological universe, though a considerable danger to the survival of much of that universe— bacteria, however, being relatively safe from our depredations. Gould has long argued that the primary trend of biological evolution is toward diversity, variety, rather than toward greater complexity, which is only a marginal and minor development taking life as a whole. Indeed, there has also been massive evolution toward decreased complexity, as among the vast number of parasite species that normally are less complex than their ancestors after they have offl oaded functions onto their hosts. Gould often turns Darwin’s image of the tree of life into the bush of life, as a bush shows less directionality in its widely branching stems. I am ready to agree with Gould in giving us another shock to our natural anthropocentrism, but I don’t believe, and neither does Gould, that our sheer existence and our complexity are not worthy of the most careful study. However far out in right fi eld (Gould was a great fan of baseball) we as a species might be, we are the only species that we are and we must surely try to understand ourselves. But, as I noted in the Preface, a vote of thanks to the bacteria is surely in order: “Th e Age of Bacteria transformed the earth from a cratered moonlike terrain of volcanic glassy rocks into the fertile planet in which we make our home.” And lest we underestimate these tiny organisms, invisible to the naked eye, we must remember what extraordinary capacities they have.

MUSICAL SYMBOLISN

Musical Symbolization If images are “full of muscles,” music is even more obviously kinesthetic. In considering enactive repre sen ta tion we have already had occasion to notice that rhythm is characteristic of bodily life and that early on it gets expressed musically and in the dance. Music, if we may say so, reaches right into the body. Indeed, music without some bodily response is hard to imagine: I am always amazed at the stillness of impassive audiences listening to Bach or Vivaldi, with only a very occasional head moving

AXIAL AGE 800-200 BCE

The Axial Age or Axial Period, as its sometimes called, was the period of antiquity circa 800 B.C. to 200 B.C. characterized by human thought directed toward understanding man’s place in the world. That inquiry sought a moral structure which would explain how man should live his life to achieve happiness and be in balance with the wishes of the gods. The Axial Age was not confined only to the West, but spanned the globe from the Middle East, though India, and included China. It featured individuals such as Plato, Confucius, Buddha, and Jeremiah, whose ideas had a profound influence on the future of religion and philosophy. The fact that these thinkers lived across the globe and emerged at nearly the same period in history suggests that human moral evolution had reached the same point simultaneously, perhaps under the influence of common factors.

FLOWER, TENYSON AND GOETHE

FOUND I walked in the woods All by myself, To seek nothing, That was on my mind. I saw in the shade A little flower stand, Bright like the stars Like beautiful eyes. I wanted to pluck it, But it said sweetly: Is it to wilt That I must be broken? I took it out With all its roots, Carried it to the garden At the pretty house

And planted it again In a quiet place; Now it ever spreads And blossoms forth. Goethe, walking with no purpose in mind, is attracted by the brilliant little flower. He reports having the same impulse as Tennyson: to pluck it. But unlike Tennyson, Goethe is aware that this means killing the flower. For Goethe the flower is so much alive that it speaks and warns him; and he solves the problem differently from either Tennyson or Basho. He takes the flower "with all its roots" and plants it again so that its life is not destroyed. Goethe stands, as it were, between Tennyson and Basho: for him, at the crucial moment, the force of life is stronger than the force of mere intellectual curiosity. Needless to say that in this beautif

HAVING VS BEING

The Importance of the Difference Between Having and Being The alternative of having versus being does not appeal to common sense. To have, so it would seem, is a normal function of our life: in order to live we must have things. Moreover, we must have things in order to enjoy them. In a culture in which the supreme goal is to have—and to have more and more—and in which one can speak of someone as "being worth a million dollars," how can there be an alternative between having and being? On the contrary, it would seem that the very essence of being is having; that if one has nothing, one is nothing

TANHA

The theory that the aim of life is the fulfillment of every human desire was clearly voiced, for the first time since Aristippus, by philosophers in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It was a concept that would easily arise when "profit" ceased to mean "profit for the soul" (as it does in the Bible and, even later, in Spinoza), but came to mean material, monetary profit, in the period when the middle class threw away not only its political shackles but also all bonds of love and solidarity and believed that being only for oneself meant being more rather than less oneself. For Hobbes happiness is the continuous progress from one greed (cupiditas) to another; La Mettrie even recommends drugs as giving at least the illusion of happiness; for de Sade the satisfaction of cruel impulses is legitimate, precisely because they exist and crave satisfaction. These were thinkers who lived in the age of the bourgeois class's final victory. What had been the unphilosophical practices of aristocrats became the practice and theory of the bourgeoisie.

END OF AN ILLUSION

The Great Promise of Unlimited Progress—the promise of domination of nature, of material abundance, of the greatest happiness for the greatest number, and of unimpeded personal freedom—has sustained the hopes and faith of the generations since the beginning of the industrial age

GETTING A HANDLE VERSUS GETTING A CLOSURE

GURU RETURNS

the guru came down from the mountain and went to his school. when he saw it, his heart sunk.
“what has happened to my school?” he cried. “it is falling apart. the stone is cracked and the doors are covered in rust. the halls are cluttered with junk and littered with papers. my students, tell me, what has happened?”
a student replied, “guru, it looks the same as when you left.”

How long did it take Johann Sebastian Bach to create the ‘St. Matthew Passion’?” Bach, he notes, had to live for forty-two years before he could begin writing it, and he drew on two thousand years of Christianity—indeed, on all of human culture. The subsystems of his mind had been evolving for even longer; creating Homo sapiens, Dennett writes, required “billions of years of irreplaceable design work”—performed not by God, of course, but by natural selection.

If philosophy were a sport, its ball would be human intuition. Philosophers compete to shift our intuitions from one end of the field to the other. Some intuitions, however, resist being shifted. Among these is our conviction that there are only two states of being: awake or asleep, conscious or unconscious, alive or dead, soulful or material. Dennett believes that there is a spectrum, and that we can train ourselves to find the idea of that spectrum intuitive.

The tree of life grew, its branches stretching toward complexity. Organisms developed systems, subsystems, and sub-subsystems, layered in ever-deepening regression. They used these systems to anticipate their future and to change it. When they looked within, some found that they had selves—constellations of memories, ideas, and purposes that emerged from the systems inside. They experienced being alive and had thoughts about that experience. They developed language and used it to know themselves; they began to ask how they had been made.

Four billion years ago, Earth was a lifeless place. Nothing struggled, thought, or wanted. Slowly, that changed. Seawater leached chemicals from rocks; near thermal vents, those chemicals jostled and combined. Some hit upon the trick of making copies of themselves that, in turn, made more copies. The replicating chains were caught in oily bubbles, which protected them and made replication easier; eventually, they began to venture out into the open sea. A new level of order had been achieved on Earth. Life had begun.

Reference Intake and Traffic Light Labels

Reference Intake labels show how much of your reference intake of energy, fat, saturates, sugars and salt a product contains. Since December 2014, the values shown on a reference intake label are set out in European law and for simplicity contain just one set of values for an average ‘adult’ (2).
A traffic-light label will contain the same information found in a reference intake label, but will also indicate at a glance whether these ingredients are high (red), medium (orange) or low (green).
For traffic-light labels you will find different limits for total sugars depending on whether the product is a food or a drink and more importantly if the portion size is greater than 100g or 150ml. The same colour coding system is used on products to show the level of salt, fat and saturated fats (2) (9).

SUGAR FACTS

  • There is no such thing as 'hidden sugar'. It must always be declared on the food label.
  • There has been a reduction of 15.4 per cent per capita in consumption of total sugars in the UK since 2001

Are you Vegetarian? Do you think Vegetarians live longer?

The WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified the consumption of processed meat as carcinogenic and red meat as ‘probably carcinogenic’ to humans (DOI).
Ask if or why someone is a vegetarian and you’re bound to receive many different answers. The reasons include environmental, animal welfare and ethical concerns, financial (meat is very expensive in Australia), religious beliefs and, of course, health considerations. Many doctors on SERMO identify as being vegetarian.
Are vegetarians healthier than carnivores and do they live longer? A 2013 USA study, which followed more than 95,000 men and women from 2002 to 2009, found vegetarians had a 12% lower risk of death from all causes than non-vegetarians.
An Australian study set out to test these findings and followed a total of 267,180 men and women over an average of six years. The authors concluded that after controlling for a range of other factors, there was no statistical difference between the risk of early death for vegetarians and non-vegetarians. Similar all-cause mortality between vegetarians and non-vegetarians was also seen in a UK study.
Vegetarians may have lower mortality than non-vegetarians. In many studies vegetarian participants tend to be more “health-conscious” – they smoked and drank less, were more physically active and were less likely to be overweight/obese. If vegetarianism is healthier, is it due to the abstinence of meat, the ingestion of more serves of fruit and vegetables, or some other lifestyle factor (eg increased exercise)? A vegetarian diet has consistently been associated with a reduced risk of high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and obesity. Is it mostly the reduction of these which yields a survival advantage in terms of cardiovascular disease and cancer, as a recent meta-analysis suggests?
I guess we can only agree that having a well-planned, balanced diet with sufficient fruit and vegetables is certainly good for you. With some evidence also suggesting that being seated increases your mortality, I can only apologies for the microseconds I may have shortened your life if you read this article and voted on this poll whilst sitting down!
