A Story of Maya

Narada was a sage who lived for thousands of years and wandered freely through all the regions of consciousness from heaven to earth.  Narada was on very intimate terms with the Lord, here in the form of Krishna, so he could ask him all forms of questions.  And while they were walking, he asked the Lord, “Sir, can you please explain to me the secret of this magic called maya?”

Sri Krishna hesitated, because to understand maya is to understand the whole of life. But Narada was utterly devoted to him, so the Lord replied, “Of course.  Let’s lie down here in the shade and I shall tell you everything. But first, Narada, it’s terribly hot; would you get me a cool glass of water?”

“Right away,” Narada promised, and he set out across the fields.  The sun beat down and though he was a good walker, the little line of thatched cottages on the horizon that marked the nearest village seemed no closer as he strode along.  The heat grew unbearable.  Narada’s throat became parched too; he began to think that he would ask for two glasses of water, and drink the second himself.

Finally he reached the village and ran to the nearest house.  The door opened – and there stood the most beautiful girl he had ever seen.  She smiled up at Narada through long, dark lashes and something happened to him that had never happened before.  All he could do was hem and haw.  Finally he blurted out, “Will you marry me?”  That is the Indian way, you know; you cannot just say, “What are you doing on Saturday night?”

The couple settled down to a life of connubial bliss.  After a while, children began to arrive.  Narada’s became a very animated household. Somebody was always being bathed or dressed; there were meals to get and people to be provided for.  And all these things were filling up their lives.  Narada and his wife became engrossed in their private little world, quietly building their dreams.  Years passed.  The children grew up, went to school, got married; in time, grandchildren arrived.  Narada became the patriarch of a great family, respected by the whole village; his lands stretched to the horizon. He and his wife would look at each other fondly and say, “Don’t you think being grandparents is the greatest thing on earth?”

Then a flood came.  The village fields became a raging river, and before Narada’s helpless eyes, everything that he loved and lived for – his lands, his cattle, his house, but especially his beloved wife and all their children and grandchildren – were swept away.  Of all the village, only he remained.  Unable to watch the destruction, Narada fell to his knees and cried for help from the very depths of his heart.  “Krishna!  Krishna!”

At once, the raging floods disappeared and there was Sri Krishna, standing casually on the fields where they had walked what seemed to be so many years before.  “Narada,” the Lord asked gently, “where is my glass of water?”

A famous mantra is om mani padme hum, for example. Unlike most mantras that is one we can say without getting them directly from an authentic teacher. Saying mantras as a practice is a bit more magical, in some sense, than other forms of practice or meditation.

WATCH BREATH NOT MONKEY MIND
The breath; the monkey mind is tricking you with the notion it needs to be watched, like any performer.

. By watching the breath, naturally awareness of thoughts will be developed. Different mental states produce different breathing patterns. By watching the breath one watches the physiological side of the coin, the other side, being psychological is known by effect but isn't directly observable in of itself.

Buddhism has this idea of blamelessness. I think it is wonderful. When you are truly blameless, or even just strive for blamelessness, how can you have any ill will towards yourself?

In D, everyone is born a sinner who needs saving. This is why some D baptize their babies right after birth. It’s to wash the baby’s sins away.

How has a baby sinned? What have they done wrong?

PRARABDHO KARMA?

D REINARNATION

From about my early adolescence I started believing in reincarnation and from that time, came across some teachings that reincarnation and karma were taught by Jesus but covered up.

In one particular Bible story, Jesus and his disciples come across a man who was born blind. The apostles thought to ask Jesus, whose fault was it that he was born blind? The man's, or his parents? The only way I could see it even possibly being the man's fault is if he committed a sin in a past life.

Jesus Heals a Man Born Blind

As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”

“Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him. As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”

After saying this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man’s eyes. “Go,” he told him, “wash in the Pool of Siloam” (this word means “Sent”). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing.

His neighbors and those who had formerly seen him begging asked, “Isn’t this the same man who used to sit and beg?” Some claimed that he was.

Others said, “No, he only looks like him.”

But he himself insisted, “I am the man.”

10 “How then were your eyes opened?” they asked.

11 He replied, “The man they call Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes. He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed, and then I could see.”

12 “Where is this man?” they asked him.

“I don’t know,” he said.

Baptism is to wash away the 'original sin', but it ultimately seems as some purification ritual to wash away past sins.

The only way I could see it even possibly being the man's fault is if he committed a sin in a past life.

Baptism is to wash away the 'original sin', but it ultimately seems as some purification ritual to wash away past sins.

Sure, karma you commit in the past life could lead to being born blind. But according to Buddhism its impossible to get rid of past karma by somebody else performing a magical ritual on you, so baptism is useless in that sense...

Recognition that the self is a false construct.

#########################

The most obvious illusions are the illusions of separation, of solidity, and of permanence.

#########################

For Buddhism, paradoxically, genuine self-confidence is a natural quality of egolessness. To dispel the illusion of the ego is to free oneself from a fundamental vulnerability. Genuine confidence comes from an awareness of a basic quality of our mind and of our potential for transformation and flourishing, what Buddhism calls “buddha nature”, which is present in all of us.

##########################

Buddha was not a god and never claimed to be a god.

The word "god" in English has a wide semantic range and might rightfully apply to Buddhas. The idea that the Buddha never claimed great supernatural power or knowledge or whatever is a Western revisionist fiction. The Buddhist scriptures are replete with examples of the Buddha doing miracles and saying it is meritorious to venerate him. Frankly, I think I relate to the Buddhas and bodhisattvas in a way similar to how Hindus Relate to their deities. I think that is probably true for most Buddhists.

Western Buddhists who have accepted the revisions and thus are not as close to traditional understandings may have different perspectives on Buddhas.

B MIRACLES

there are plenty of miraculous things about the Buddha there. Hiding Yasa in Plain Sight, Subduing the Nāga with Fire, The First Twin Miracle and the Miraculous Rain, Outpacing Aṅgulimāla, Teaching Khema Impermanence, Knowing the real name of Anāthapiṇḍika, the twin miracle at Sāvatthī, Levitating over the Rohini River to stop the war, Teleporting Across the Ganga (a lesser known one, but found in Mahāparinibbānasutta), challenging the Brahmā in Brahmanimantanikasutta, Taming the Drunken Elephant, Healing Suppiyā (also lesser known, but in the Theravāda Vinaya, not sure about the other Vinayas)...

that the Buddha regards himself as being greater than a human and worthy of worship, and traditional Buddhists think that is true as well. Now that is very visible in the canon.

###########################

If the ego were really our deepest essence, it would be easy to understand our apprehension about dropping it. But if it is merely an illusion, ridding ourselves of it is not ripping the heart out of our being, but simply opening our eyes.

Rather than weakening the individual, the understanding of the non-existence of an independent “self” leads to a deep rooted sense of inner freedom, strength and openness to others that allows the flourishing of altruistic love and compassion, rooted in wisdom.

###################

##########################
Look at what happens at the beginning of all of these scriptures. The person comes up to the Buddha, pays homage to them, and then they ask their questions or receive a teaching. What do you think paying homage means in this case? It means prostrating before the Buddha, because he worthy of veneration.

Now, there are also plenty of examples in the poems written by the early monastic assembly. As an example, from Ven. Khemā's poem:

"Worshiping the stars,

serving the sacred flame in a grove;

failing to grasp the true nature of things,

foolish me, I thought this was purity.

But now I worship the Buddha,

supreme among men.

Doing the teacher’s bidding,

I am released from all suffering.”

‘Marble therapy’ is an unusual way to help you think positive.

Moving objects upwards helps people remember happier memories, psychologists have found.

People who moved marbles to a higher box were more likely to remember positive memories than those who moved them down, an unusual experiment revealed.

Anything else that activates the idea of ‘up’ would probably work:

  • Raising one’s arms up,
  • walking up,
  • climbing,
  • or even just looking up.

The reason is that we use spatial concepts to think about emotions.

For example, a happy person says they are ‘on top of the world’ or ‘on cloud nine’.

However, a sad person says they are ‘down in the dumps’ or at ‘rock bottom’.

These metaphors are built in to how our minds process emotions.

Up is happy and down is sad.
