Nothing. Or Everything. Depending on your orientation and personal preference.

I coined the term Sakshi (Witnessing) Vasati (Abiding or Allowing) because, out of my own 45 years of experience practicing virtually every method of meditation out there, simple witnessing and allowing everything to be as it is, allowing all phenomena to rise and fall dispassionately, without engaging or involvement, proved to be the two cornerstones of true meditation. Every other form, including mantra japa, kriya meditation, vipassana, body scan, kundalini, focusing on specific chakras and many, many more, all seemed to include some amount of ‘manipulation.’ And I was clear that, as long as the individual ‘ego’ was trying to manipulate, to ‘make something happen’ or reach a certain ‘state’ through their ‘own’ (ego again) meditative efforts, that was consistently counter-productive to realizing the ego was illusion and allowing it to dissolve.

In the end, “we” can’t ‘make ourselves enlightened’ through any efforts of our illusory ego - that would be a built-in oxymoron.

But when we simply witness and allow everything (and I mean everything) to be as it is, ego, which is nothing more or less than our argument with Reality, no longer is in argument with It, so it just dissolves, disappears. I simply found this to be a much more direct form of meditation, rather than trying to make something happen. So I joined the words Sakshi and Vasati and wrote the book “Watching Your Life - Meditation simplified and demystified.”

I’ve gotten responses from some who read the book and started practicing this method. Some said, “It’s good, but it takes time to let go of my attachment & identification to all the things rising & falling in my mind, so I’m not yet experiencing all the benefits yet.” Which is perfect, because that’s why any method of meditation is a long practice, a marathon…not a sprint. And of course, which part of you would be looking for the ‘benefits?’ The ego/mind :-) The very part you are wanting to let go of. So what do you get to do? Witness that ego desire for ‘personal benefits’ and allow everything to be as it is, not as it will be later when you ‘get the benefits. That’s perfect, you are on the right track.

Others have said it may be too simple and direct a form of meditation for them, and I totally respect that. And still others have written to me personally to tell me reading and practicing Sakshi Vasati has literally changed their life. If only one person had reported that, it would have been worth offering this method and writing the book, but there have been many.

Sakshi Vasati is nothing new. Elements of witnessing and allowing have formed the cornerstone of different schools of Zen, dzogchen, and other Buddhist and Vedanta meditations for millennia. So I cannot take credit for inventing anything new - it’s definitely old wine in new bottles. Many modern teachers, the world over, teach some form of this ‘true meditation.’

And as I said at the beginning, whether this method will be a right fit and become your ‘best meditation friend’ for you is strictly dependent on your taste and temperament. In many of my Quora answers, I have made two things quite clear: No form of meditation ‘brings you enlightenment.’ And even though the student often follows the teachers instructions to the “T” when first practicing, every student eventually makes a few internal adjustments to suit their particular needs and preferences. And of course, just about everyone’s method of meditation evolves over time anyway, as they find that letting go of certain practices and incorporating certain new twists really works well for them.

So I offer Sakshi Vasati humbly, and hope that it gives you a great foundation for a life of…you guessed it…watching every phenomena (including yourself) dispassionately and allowing everything to be exactly as it is. It is instant freedom.

AWARENESS THE SCREEN

No matter what we experience, it always appears within our awareness. This awareness has no limitations and can hold anything and everything we encounter – whether pleasant or painful, happy or sad, or anything in between. During the practice of meditation, the most important point is to simply be as you are, without doing anything extra.
