When you are watchful of your thoughts, you notice that there is a watcher, a Witness, watching the thoughts, which itself is not another thought. It’s simply a neutral observer - with no thoughts, resistance, reaction or judgments of its own. Like a pair of eyes that are not connected to a thinking/feeling brain. It can only notice/observe; that’s it’s only ability.
As you continue meditation, you become familiar with this dispassionate, disengaged witness and allow that to become the central point of your focus. You allow yourself to dwell in & as this witness. Then thoughts, body sensations, and emotions can come and go, can increase or decrease, or even become totally still. It doesn’t matter. You’re just watching, and realizing you are the Watcher, not those thoughts & feelings. That’s all you need to do.
Eventually, even the Witness disappears into the Nothing behind this Everything.

Yes it is great for his devotees, This about your faith only, if you develop great faith in a name or a mantra it becomes great like sikhs call Guru nam or Sat sri Akal, and magic depends on your own devotion and what works for you. Same if for Buddha and Shiva, This is your faith and Sadhna. Now different sampradayas have different mantras to revere and all would contest that there mantra is best. Now understand reality, For Normalians, mundane people, who can not understand the truth of inexplicable greatest God, Rudra has devised different modes of worship so they in few lives would become eligible for real Gyan.
Let us take your Mantra, this is supposedly chanted by Valmiki which made him a great Gyani rishi, He changed from a dacoit to a rishi but he needed to become Bramha gyani, because Bramha Gyanis become liberated in same life, and He has to come as Tulsidas, in his previous life he didnt became eligible for Shiva tattva Gyan, than in this life he worshiped Shiva, having same faith in great Mantra also and he stayed only a Kaashi, because only Shiva and Kashi guarantees sure Moksha none other Teertha or Gods can , So you can say that this mantra is great that it made Valmiki mukta in two lives. But this doesnt means other names and mantras are anywhere inferior. There are greater and greater names of One same Lord, people call with different epithets attributes characters and names.
For than know thousands name of Vishnu equals one name of Rama, and Lacs of names of Vishnu and other Gods equals a name of Durga,. Lacs of mantras of other all Gods equal one name mantra of Shiva, Those who are staunch Vaishnavs Shiva at Kashi would give them any of four mokshas with in the name of there personal Ishta they worshiped, Krishna Narayan, Rama etc, For Devi bhaktas he would gave name Durga as Tarak Mantra. And in my view too her name is greatest.
As few saints say Shiva gives Ram name to devotees in kashi to liberate, Shastra clearly mention that Shiva gives Tarak Mantra Durga and Liberate her Devotees. To his Devotees he would Give Pranava and give them highest Kaivalya. Shastra also say, greater than all names all mantras is Pranav, Shiva himself says, that i love Pranava 1000 times than other names of mine and other gods. But make no mistake it can not be chanted like DIY, it must be taken from guru and jap is done with a prescribed method. This Mahamantra is not like Nam mantra it can not chanted openly any time, but in japa and worship and in mind one properly initiated or guru agya prapta, person can chant in mind always.
Than this greater inferior are said so that normalinas pashus, can focus there mind on one entity only, like Krishna shastra says his is greatest name, Ram is 14 kala he is complete sixteen kala avatar, etc, Than in Linga Puran it has whole adhyay to define greateness of Ashatkshar and Dwadashakshar mantra of Vishnu, it says these two mantras of god are sarvshrstha and Lacs of time greater than these mantras is Panchakshar mantra of Shiva.
Now even forget these gods name, if a siddha guru will give u Any Mantra say algam , oka boka wuetevr it will start yielding fruits, but it is not easy to find such siddha, If you know about Shabar Mantras than they are strange many have more non sensical words than i have wrote here as example, but they work, because some great siddha has made them, Thanthe power in name of rama of Kabir was different from power of Ram name of kamaal or Tulsi, and when you chant your rama mantra its power will be different, so more than mantra it depends who gave you this mantra and the amount of Sadhna one has performed to awaken it.
The base of all Mantras is Damru of Shiva, all varna akshar etc emerged from his Damru, we worship all Matrikas hence all akshars of sanskrit are mantra. When a siddha woulde energize certain mantra with his power it become active, They can make there own mantars that is what shabar mantra sahstra is self made mantras of Aghoris, Aughad, siddhas etc. And all Mantras specially are contained in Shivas panchakshar mantra, and in Pranava.
Than as per Shree Madevi bhagwat, Navarn mantra is greatest among all mantras known to men, it surely is, Shiva took deeksha of this mantra from mahadevi and chants it. He like name Ram because of good deeds of Rama, and Rama is one of his greatest devotees, but he worships Durga Only when he takes Avatars of shankar Rudra etc.
Normalians having sansarik buddhi can not fathom lord of all Lords Shiva easily, But Avatars seem to them easy because they can identify themselves with them and also queens and kings in this land were taken as Gods, not in shastra but by common uneducated people, So they worship Avatars and this makes there Chitaa shudha if there sadhna is right, and than they became eligible for Worship of Shiva Tattva.
Now who can be greater knower of this Name than hanuman, he must have got full siddhi of this mantra, and he asks Ram , that does he needs to do something still, Rama said, yes still you need to acquire adwait gyan of Shiva Tattva without it true moksha is not possible, four mokshas are not true only kaivalya is true, and that can only be had by Shiva Tattva Gyan, his Grace, no other Gods have authority to bestow it, So Chanting any Nam mantra or this mantra would take you to higher states where one can become able to grasp great gyan of Niarakar Shiva and attain moksha.
So right way to chant this mantra is take deeksha from guru. do its purashcharan, and know yes it is great mantra, but when you say greatest, this also can mean that other mantras are not that great but its laughable lie, there many greater mantras which you or normalinas simply dont know and can not know, So her sadharan people, normalians this nam mantras are easy and good. Have devotion and faith but dont compare or boast that what you do is actually greatest, this is fallacy, For the master of this Mantra is Ram and Ram is ndevotee of Shiva, and shiva is devotee of no one in reality yet he praises other gods like ganpati , Durga ,Ram ETC , just so that there devotees shradha get fixed in them and they dont confuse themselves. but dont compare or degrade other names to profess yours, all names of Lord are Great.
So be it Mahadev, Radhe, or Ram or even bum bum, your devotion and intensity is the main thing, to let u not stray in doubt many mantras are said to be great, so be focused and chant this mantra with full devotion.

A good intellectual question!!
There is a body-mind. But, what is this self-identity ?
I look like a certain person. I eat certain food. My brain has certain memories and certain patterns. All the organs are same as everyone. Where the heck is the ‘I’ in all these ?
This thing moves, eats, smiles, sleeps, works, thinks, feels, and does many things. But, where is the ‘I’ in all these ?
Think ?
Think of all the stray dogs in the street, or the thousands of ants marching in the tree trunk. Could you imagine an ‘I’ for every fellow, or are they just another ant and just another dog who live without the need of a specific ‘so and so’ identity ?
Now, think about the trillions and trillions of organisms moving around. They are there. But, why should they all be Mr X, Ms Y, and so on ? Except for social convenience, do these identities make any sense in the realm of truth ?
There is space inside a pot. The pot now says it is a pot. The space outside tells the space inside that you are the same pure space, and this pot form around you doesn't change it. You are still not the pot. You never were the pot, and never will be the pot. Always and always, you are the same space with no identity as pot or bucket.
‘No one is looking and no one is answering’ means no ‘identity’ is looking and no ‘identity’ is answering.
who exactly do they think they're talking to?- To an organism that has assumed a psychological identity while there is none.
