DELUSION TO VIRTUE
B

Modern Bodhisattva’s Way of Life: Transforming delusions into virtues

To enhance our experience of exchanging self with others, Shantideva now goes on to describe a special method where we put ourself in the place of others who may seem to have deluded minds towards us.  Where previously we have learnt to identify with the basis of others, that is their body, now it seems we learn to identify with the basis of others that is their mind.   In dependence upon their mind of jealousy, or their mind of pride, and so forth, we think I. We are imputing I upon that basis, aren’t we? We are bringing to mind their jealousy for example, and thinking I.

It is quite funny.  Normally we dislike people who have such delusions.  Here we learn how to love them. It seems we love them for those faults!  Then no matter what people are like, no matter how deluded their behavior, no matter how they feel towards us, we just love them. We love them. We love them as they are. A jealous person, we love. A proud person, we love. Competitive person, we love.  It is just three examples, but we can take any other delusion and regard a person with that delusion as someone whom we dearly love. Even, or especially, if that deluded behavior is directed towards us.

It is interesting how we normally distance ourselves from jealous, competitive, or prideful people.  Here we are doing completely the opposite — drawing closer and closer to them through identifying with the delusion that they have in their mind, a delusion they have towards us.  The fact is that beings in our world are deluded, aren’t they?  If we cannot like or love deluded beings in our world, then there will be no one to love!  We have to love them not despite their delusions towards us, but because of their delusions towards us.  If we don’t, then there is no one to love otherwise.  And it is worth asking ourselves once again, where do these deluded, childish beings come from in the first place?  Here, Shantideva shows us how to take those people who have deluded minds towards us, and love them for it.

This practice is unusual because generally we’re encouraged to focus on the good qualities of others, and in that way, love them.  That is what we normally do, focus on the good qualities of others, and then naturally a mind of love will arise towards them.  We can’t help it, we naturally will like, even love, people possessing those qualities.  And now Shantideva is giving us a method to love those with apparently bad qualities.  Then, it doesn’t matter how they are – we focus on people’s good qualities, naturally we come to love them; we focus on their bad qualities, naturally we come to love them.  With this wisdom, it doesn’t matter what they’re like anymore, we can love them.

I think what is extraordinary about these meditations is that out of one’s own self-centeredness, naturally delusions such as jealousy, pride, and so forth arise, but when we identify with others’ self-centeredness, their delusions, jealousy, pride, and so forth, naturally virtues arise in us.  If we identify with our delusions, they are delusions; if we identify with others’ delusions, they are virtues.  Interesting how that works.  Jealousy normally thinks, for example, that we want what others have.  If we generate jealousy, we have a delusion.  But the jealousy of somebody else wants them to have what we have, so if we identify with that, we will want them to have what we have.  In other words, we will want to give.  A virtue.  The same is true with all the other delusions (except ignorance).  By identifying with the delusions in somebody else’s mind, it functions to oppose the delusions in our own mind.  Amazing!

By doing these meditations, we find out a lot about ourselves.  We see ourselves from somebody else’s perspective, and this helps us realize how we are and how we should change.

(8.140) Putting myself in the place of those who are lower than, equal to, and higher than me,
And then regarding my former self as “other”,
With my mind free from the crippling conception of doubt
I should meditate on jealousy, competitiveness, and pride.

In Eight Steps to Happiness Geshe-la says that through the force of meditations such as these, we become more open to others’ point of view, more tolerant and more understanding, and we shall naturally treat others with greater respect and consideration.  This will help us improve our communication with others and our knowing how to help others.  We must try to free ourself from doubts, any hesitation, or resistance to these meditations for whatever reason.  We should not worry that if we identify with the delusions of somebody else, we will become a deluded being ourselves.  If we adopt the delusions of others as our own, they are virtues as far as we are concerned.  We must try to increase our faith and, in this way, remove any doubt or hesitation and resistance to engaging in these meditations.  Then we will get some experience, we will gain some glimpse of the incredible meaning behind these meditations that will inspire us more and more to exchange ourself so completely with others, even those whom we find difficult or dislike, or even hate.

We put ourself in the place of those who are lower, equal to, and higher than us.  There are those of course who we consider to be lower than, equal to, or higher than ourselves. not in all respects of course, but in certain respects.  We can divide others into those three categories.  First of all, we put ourself in the place of those whom we regard to be in some respect lower than us (that’s just about everybody since we have so much pride) and then we look back to our former self with jealous thoughts.

To name but three problems. He’s right, problems are relentless. While we are seeking happiness and freedom outside of our minds, it is also impossible to solve them all, or even very many of them – there’ll be new things to worry about every single day. In his introduction to the Foundation Program many years ago, Venerable Geshe-la said:

There are always problems in samsara.

) "You think you are free, but there probably isn’t a gesture, a thought, an emotion, an attitude, or a belief in you that isn’t coming from someone else. Isn’t that horrible? And you don’t know it. A mechanical life has been stamped into you.

You feel pretty strongly about certain things, and you think it is you who are feeling strongly about them, but are you really? It’s going to take a lot of awareness for you to understand that perhaps this thing you call 'I' is simply a conglomeration of your past experiences, your conditioning, and your programming.

That’s painful. In fact, when you’re beginning to awaken, you experience a great deal of pain. It’s painful to see your illusions being shattered. Everything that you thought you had built up crumbles—and that’s painful."

When you ask for forgiveness or you forgive somebody else, it's the big ego that does that because you think you are good. You say, 'Now I have forgiven that person. I have asked that person to forgive me.' It's like saying, 'I can do it again and again.' Forget about that, but go within yourself and ask the question, 'Who needs forgiveness?'

And you will realize that forgiveness and your ego are synonymous. When there is no ego there is no idea of forgiveness. There is just loving kindness and compassion and everything is reconciled. And things take care of themselves."

Desires that are not fulfilled are the ones that are going to trouble you. Desires that land in the memory are going to cause problems. They will always be pushing themselves forward, saying, ‘I must have this, I must have this’. Pressure to fulfil unfulfilled desires brings about manifestation. It is samsara [the reason for reincarnation].

This is why we are all here again, in yet another birth. If there was no desire, you would not have manifested at all. This desire is bringing you into a body again and again. Desire is attachment, and attachment causes us endless problems. It is better to forget desires completely. Don’t let them lodge in the memory."

A wife borrows hubby’s brand new car. She dents the front bumper. She knows he’ll go mad, if she says that she has dented the front bumper.

So, instead, she tells him she has SMASHED the car to pieces, and it’s a write-off.

As he starts to get pissed off, she says, “ I’m only kidding. It’s just a dent in the front bumper”.

He sighs with relief, and says, happily, “Thank God for that!”.

For example, let's take the tallest building in the world at the moment - Burj Khalifa, located in the UAE (828 m)

The foundation of Burj Khalifa was designed as a pile-and-slab foundation. The 3.7 m thick slab is something like a flower with three petals. The slab rests on 192 so-called "hanging" piles with a diameter of 1.5 m and a length of 43 m, which are not fixed in the rock because the Emirates are located in the desert. Even at a depth of 50 meters, the soil there is relatively soft.

So, the depth of the foundation of a Burj Khalifa skyscraper is about 50 meters.

BG8.14

Iam easily attainable by that even steadfast yogi who remembers Me daily and constantly, with a single mind, O son of Pritha. (Bhagavad Gita Chapter 8,14)

He who thinks of Me, the supreme Truth (Bhagavan or God), daily and constantly, not for a few days or a few weeks, but uninterruptedly throughout life, to that yogi who is ever steadfast in thought, I am easily accessible.

Therefore we must always be at it, if we want to succeed. We must always call Bhagavan to mind and not allow other thoughts to interfere.

We must always try to live in the presence of God. It is not sufficient to think of God on Sundays and then forget Him all the rest of the week. To attain God, to reach Him, to enjoy His blessed company, we must be steadfast in our devotion and with a pure and single mind we must call on Him as often as possible. And for the successful yogi it is possible to think of God at all times. Nothing can interfere with that state of communion between God and His devotee. But how to reach that state?

There is a song by the Hindu poet Ramprasad, where the mind is called upon to worship always the Divine Mother of the universe:

Worship the Mother, O my mind, in whatever way you like. Never forget to sing Her praise. When you lie down to rest, think that you are prostrating before the Mother. And when you lie down to sleep, think that you are meditating on Her. When you eat, offer the food to Her. Whatever sound you hear, think that it comes from Her. Recognize Her as the Soul of all beings. If we live thus, we will always remember God.

But we may ask, is it after all worthwhile to go through so much trouble, for, indeed, it is no small matter to think of God always. Yes, the reward is the very highest that can come to man. It means freedom from samsara, liberation from all bondage.

Only the perfect man can transcend the limits of the human and yet not withdraw from the world, live in accord with mankind and yet suffer no injury himself. Of the worlds teaching he learns nothing. He has that within which makes him independent of others. If the eye is unobstructed, the result is sight. If the ear is unobstructed, the result is hearing. If the nose is unobstructed, the result is smell. If the mouth is unobstructed, the result is taste. If the mind is unobstructed, the result is wisdom.

Then Gurujii explained the 14th - 16th Tenets of "Trikamukhyamatāni (Main tenets of Trika Shaivism)":
Just as a king does not find happiness in sitting on an inadequate seat, so the mind cannot definitely find happiness in enjoying objects||14||
For that very reason, the mind can find Supreme Joy only when it is dissolved in Paramaśiva. In Trika Shaivism, that (is) truly Liberation or Emancipation||15||

SIVA ADVAITA VEDANTA

It is present inside every one, it is knowledge itself. It is pure intelligence, and beyond darkness: it is Antaryami (one which is present inside everything). It is Purusha or soul. He is the great god, He is time, and He is fire. He is the one who is not revealed. This is how Stuti or vedas describe the (soul) Atma (485) अस्माद्विजायते विभ्रमत्रैव प्रविलीय समायाँ मायया बद्धः करोति विविधास्तनुः asmad vijayate viśvamatraiva praviliyate sa may mayaya baddhab karoti vividhästan From him, the world is born, and in him it (world) disappears. Some say that these 3 schools cater to different stages of realization that the seeker may be at. Dvaita - To make the seeker understand that it's not all randomness. There is divinity. Vishishta Advaita - To make a seeker see the divinity within himself, but still strive to understand the ultimate divinity and move towards it. Advaita - When a seeker finally realizes himself as that divine, and all this illusion is just him experiencing from a limited perspective due to avidya. It is best not to consider these as higher or lower undestanding, as they will hurt the progress of the seeker, and ultimately this is everyone's own personal journey, not a comparitive one.

WAVES ON OCEAN OF MATTER

Namaste Swamiji, A conflict of Daitya and Adaitya position of BRAHMA In Hindu philosophy is eternal but my simple take is that; before my birth I was invisible and also had no shape (NIRAKAR). But after my birth I got a shape (SWAKAR) and eventually visible. And every living thing has the same position. So, I am sometimes visible and sometimes invisible (BAKTYA & OBAKTYA) as well, of course as per BRAHMA'S decisions. Again, BRAHMA being supreme conscious power (Sat, Chit, Anand) he is capable of taking any shape according to his wishes. So, the BRAHMA as well as ourselves are all DAITYA and ODAITYA. But BRAHMA takes shape according to his wish but we got shaped according to our karma by the BRAHMA. BRAHMA has no karma so doesn't get guided by the result of karma. I think, this simple theory of mine help resolve the conflict between Daitya and Odaitya theory of BRAHMA and brings both the groups in same platform of ANANDA.

According to H H Nisharga Dutta “All knowledge is conceptual hence False”Thinking means creating objects in mind (coneptualisation)comparable hence False. Getting rid of conceptulisation is Realisation/Elightenment.Words are dualistic hence Bondage

Unlike Dvaitins and Visishtradvaitins, the Advaitins never look at the other two scornfully. Advaita very much recognises "adhikari bheda" (the degree of spiritual evolution or, say, eligibility differential) among multifarious seekers! To draw an analogy, a Post-Graduate does not condemn either Primary education or Secondary education!!!

A
The Advaitin does not deny that he can see a wave and that it is part of the ocean but, he says, with the knowledge that the ocean or the wave is but a name and form, the substance being water and in that knowledge enjoy the ocean and wave and bubble and foam and glacier and ice...without any delusion or fear...

As a Catholic I find this explanation is close to Meister Eckhart, St Maximus the Confessor, and St Palamas. It's interesting to find that while our religions vastly different. Hinduism and Christianity. Both affirm that there is no other ground of our existence than the one beyond anything. St Aquinas as an example famously refuted a popular belief among Christians of his time that God is the highest being as if He is the first chain in being. He argued that can't be correct because it'll make God a member of the class of being, albeit as the first. Instead God must be beyond being, neither being nor non being. Beyond any classification and completely unknowable. St Palamas even argue beyond God, hypertheos. We can know His energies said St Basil to Eunomius. The illustration on ocean, waves, and water also fit with Eckhart. While human nature is created and different than uncreated divine nature but our nature only exists in the ground of existence which is God Himself. Fourth Lateran Council declared that the hyperousia beyond essence is neither begetting the Son, nor begotten by the Father, nor proceeds. This pure existence has no hypostatic property, just is. St John Paul II at Assisi Prayer invited Buddhists and Hindu monks to pray together for peace in the world. Pope Francis in joint declaration with Grand Imam wrote that it's God's will to have plurality of religions. We can certainly learn from one another.

Buddhism was dominent religion when Shankara came. Is it safe to assume that to maintain some continuity Shankara willingly decided to make Advahita as a small evolutionary philosophical step away from Budhism. Once Vedhic Marga got established then Ramanuja took next step, and than Madhav took another step. It would have been a giant leap for society to go from Buddhism to Madhva Philosophy.
