In Advaita Vedanta past lives are seen only as part of the illusory play of Maya, where the eternal Atman by its own Maya shakti, forgets itself and identifies with the illusory appearances (infinite bodies). The concept of birth, death and past lives are applicable for this illusory appearances.

The question is asked by one such illusory appearance which is in reality Brahman/Atman identifying with that body-mind. From Absolute reality point of view, you do not exist at all. You are as real as the tiger or the mountain in your dream.

When we have to explain the birth/death etc in this Maya, then we can say that brain perishes, but its the mind (the subtle body) that moves from one body to another body. Consciousness doesnt move. Its all pervading. Body-mind etc appear in that Consciousness and get activated (brought to life) by that Consciousness. The subtle body called mind which is a bundle of Karmic impressions and desires moves from one body to another
