This breaks the epistemic symmetry between them: we do not know matter in the same way that we know mind, for—as cogently argued by Linde in the earlier quote—matter is an inference and mind a given. Consequently, although mind can encompass polar opposites—such as the feelings of love and fear in the context of a situation wherein someone feels passionate about a particular aspect of someone else (assuming that other passions, such as hate, which is arguably a form of fear, are in fact particular instances of love or fear)—it cannot itself be the polar opposite of matter or matter’s properties.
