Time feels like the simplest way to bring structure to our lives. When the clock moves forward, it creates the possibility of being late. It helps us make sense of the rising and setting of the sun, and of the cycles of life and death. On the most basic level, time offers an explanation for how things unfold. It helps us express sorrow for a child lost too soon, whose future was full of promise. At the same time, it allows us to feel contentment when looking back on a life fully lived, having made the most of our time.
