VIDEHAMUKTI X DUST PLUS SPRTLTY DPS

The following dialogue is taken from Talks with Sri Ramana Maharshi, Talk number 265, my additions are in red:

Questioner: There are said to be sadeha mukta (liberated in body) and videha mukta (liberated without body).

Sri Ramana Maharshi: There is no liberation, and where are muktas [the liberated ones]?

Questioner: Do not Hindu sastras [scriptures] speak of mukti [liberation]?

Sri Ramana Maharshi: Mukti is synonymous with the Self. Jivan mukti (liberation while alive) and videha mukti (liberation after the body falls) are all for the ignorant. The Jnani  [liberated one] is not conscious of mukti or bandha (bondage).

Bondage, liberation and orders of mukti are all said for an ajnani [ignorant or unliberated one] in order that ignorance might be shaken off.

There is only mukti and nothing else.

The following is the taken from Vichara Shangraham, a text attributed to Sri Ramana Maharshi. Vichara Sangraham is often translated simply as ‘Self Enquiry’ and literally means ‘A compendium of (Self) Enquiry’. This excerpt is very the last section of the text:

Question: What are the characteristics of the jivan-mukta (the liberated in life) and the videha-mukta (the liberated at death)?

Sri Ramana Maharshi: ‘I am not the body; I am Brahman which is manifest as the Self. In me who am the plenary [absolute] Reality, the world consisting of bodies etc, are mere appearance, like the blue of the sky’. He who has realized the truth thus is a jivan-mukta.

Yet so long as his mind has not been resolved, there may arise some misery for him because of relation to objects on account of prarabdha (karma which has begun to fructify and whose result is the present body) [ie. due to destiny], and as the movement of mind has not ceased there will not be also the experience of bliss.

The experience of Self is possible only for the mind that has become subtle and unmoving as a result of prolonged meditation. He who is thus endowed with a mind that has become subtle, and who has the experience of the Self is called a jivan-mukta. It is the state of jivan-mukti that is referred to as the attributeless Brahman and as the Turiya.

When even the subtle mind gets resolved, and experience of self ceases, and when one is immersed in the ocean of bliss and has become one with it without any differentiated existence, one is called a videha-mukta. It is the state of videha-mukti that is referred to as the transcendent attributeless Brahman and as the transcendent Turiya. This is the final goal.

Because of the grades in misery and happiness, the released ones, the jivan-muktas and videha- muktas, may be spoken of as belonging to four categories — Brahmavid, vara, variyan and varishtha. But these distinctions are from the standpoint of the others who look at them; in reality, however, there are no distinctions in release [liberation] gained through jnana [self-knowledge].

A Kriya Yoga Master once said: “Ignorance is the cause of suffering and attachment. Knowledge brings liberation because it dispels the darkness of ignorance. Expansion (tan) and contraction have to do with the breath and are correlated to life and death respectively. Narrowness in mind, heart and expression is the cause of suffering, while expansion in love and understanding leads to abiding peace and liberation. Breath is the external manifestation of life. In every disposition your breath changes. A normal breath is every four seconds. Extreme emotion makes you gasp or pant. Rapid breathing, at an interval of one to five every two seconds portrays strong emotion such as anger and passion, which only lead to suffering. When the duration of the breath is prolonged and expanded, inner peace and calmness can be achieved. If tan means expansion, trana means liberation, so tantra is a path to liberation through expansion or prolongation of the breath. This facilitates an amplified capacity to understand the deeper meaning of life. We can therefore say that a mind that is fast is sick. A mind that is slow is sound. And a mind that is still is Divine. Kriya Yoga pranayama teaches man to untie the chord of breath that binds our souls to the bodily cage. The soul is then released to fly and expand into the super-conscious skies of omnipresent Spirit and come back at will into the little body cage. Through the practice of pranayama or life-force control the Kriya Yogi then comes to realize that his body is not made of flesh, but of life-force condensed from the thought of God ! Kundalini energy is the universal life-force of sustenance and evolution. At the base of the spine, the sleeping beauty Shakti awaits her Lord Charming, Shiva’s kiss of Consciousness, which releases her to ascend up the spine and unite with him in holy communion at the thousand petalled lotus in the brain. Shakti-Kundalini is the bride Cinderella, the “lady of the cinders”, who when fanned by the alchemical fire of the Shiva-Shakti Kriya technique, ignites as kundalini, blazing up the chimney of the spinal sushumna to unite with her immortal Lord Shiva in the crown chakra. It is through Kriya Yoga practice that the breath enters the central channel in the spine called the Sushumna nadi. Until that happens all philosophies and spiritual talk are the mere babblings of a child...........”

Does ego have to die or end for realisation to occur?

Tom: Yes, ego-mind-thought must die for realisation to occur. Those who are still attached to the body-mind-world and still take themselves to be the body say otherwise.

Ego is ignorance. Ego is duality. It is the ego that creates/projects the body-mind and world, like in a dream. When ego goes, everything goes, and all that remains is the Self. It cannot be put into words or understood by the mind. In truth ego never existed at all.

Objections to this such as ‘how does the sage function without ego’ only occur in ignorance of taking the sage to be the body and in the presense of ego-ignorance seeing body-mind-world.

The paradox of this cannot be explained in words, but when the mind becomes so completely and utterly still so that time and space and personhood all cease to exist, this ‘Self’ is somehow ‘known without knowing’.

If you are asking if Krishna was a real person "per human understanding", Then, Yes, Krishna was a real person. But Avatars are not "person" per say. Time cannot bind consciousness. Avatars appear in a limited time frame to correct a situation and then merge back into their viswaroopa till next time the requirement again arises. Common folk will never understand an Avatar because they cant, even if they see, hear and touch. Same for Shiva and Shakti

In Hinduism there are various levels of spiritual maturity. At the lowest level, Gods are useful in keeping people follow some good principles. At the higher level God just becomes a reference point of ideality that one can strive to achieve. Instead of God such people focus on the Divine quality of perfection and absolute. Anyone who accomplishes almost that level of inner equilibrium is Divine in relation to those who are at the lower levels of spiritual development. For them these men and women are almost Godlike. Such people have walked the length and breadth of the Indian subcontinent for eons and they are revered and sometimes worshipped by many who follow their teachings. This led to different pathways and schools to achieve the same level of Divinity within. Deities were created with specific purposes for enhancement or acceleration of the practice. Deities need not be in a human form. They can be in the form of sounds or geometric patterns. Everything is a step in the ladder for achieving the pinnacle of inner equilibrium (known as Shiva). So in all God is what you realize within subjectively.

KY “Although we do not realize it, the life we live is completely conditioned by our likes and dislikes. When we like something or someone intensely, then we no longer just like it, we love it. The stronger form of like is love, and it brings attachment. On the other hand, when we dislike something intensely, it is hatred, and with it comes repulsion and the desire to run away from it. Consequently, although we spend our lives searching for happiness, we are caught in the iron-like grip of likes and dislikes, and as a result we are miserable. Hence the attractions and repulsions we create in our mind are the source of all our misery. True happiness does not come from having much, but from being attached to little.

Do not confuse attachment with love. Attachment is about fear and dependency and has more to do with love of self than love of another. Love without attachment is the purest love because it isn’t about what others can give you because you are feeling empty. It is about what you can give others because you are already full.”

Mahadev is the greatest Vaishnav and Narayan is greatest Shaiva.

Vishnu worships Shiva in his every incarnation.

Krishna did penance for many years meditating on Shiv-Shakti to get a boon regarding his children.

Ram send Hanuman to get a Shivlinga from Kashi, before leaving for Lanka, but, fearing that his prayer will be delayed to Mahadev he himself made a Shivlinga(Rameshwar temple).

Shivlinga is also found in Ayodhya, Ram janam bhoomi, when the land levelling was done. Shiva also provided Ram with the knowledge of Ishwar Geeta.

Parshuram Mahadev temple(Rajasthan) is the temple of Shiva made by Parshuram(6th incarnation of Vishnu) himself by cutting the rock with the fence, had performed rigorous penance for many years of Lord Shiva. On the basis of austerity, he had received Dhanush, Akshay Tumar and Divya Charias from Lord Shiva.

Shiva on the other hand always meditates on Vishnu.

Gopeshwar Mahadev is another temple which brings out the beauty of their relationship.Where Mahadev took a form of Gopi to enter Raasleela and Krishna realizing that Shiva is there declared that he should be worshiped every time before entering the Raas.

One can’t be a pure devotee if he/she is praying to one and disrespecting the other.

Spiritual teachers like to say: “This is it.”

“This is the answer.”

“Just this.”

You look around wildly, but you only see the parking lot at Walmart.

The purpose of silence is to keep us from talking nonsense when we say “This is it.”

Because that would be crazy -

To direct someone’s attention to circumstances, then say:

This is it.

This moment is actually a door.

In the Narnia books, kids climb into a wardrobe and close the door.

When the door is shut, another door opens to the world of Narnia.

If you missed the Narnia books, there’s a similar theme in the movie Real Genius.

A college student notices a guy is living in his dorm room closet.

He assumes the guy is living in an ancillary room behind the closet, but he can’t find the entrance.

One day, it occurs to him to shut the door behind him.

The back wall opens, and an elevator takes him to a vast network of underground tunnels.

And he thought the guy was living in his closet!

Spiritual teachers can seem like they’re asking you to live in your closet.

What’s so great about here and now?

The problem is, they can’t explain what this moment actually is.

They can only encourage you to close the door.

We’re always in the present moment, but our attention is elsewhere.

When we close the “horizontal” door, this moment reveals itself as the “vertical” door to an infinite dimension of silence.

(Also called stillness, presence, or the unmanifest.)

External circumstances are nothing compared to the immensity of this dimension.

So every ordinary moment presents this extraordinary opportunity.

KY  A wise Sage once said: “Without Grace you cannot even start on the spiritual path. But Grace arises only from action, so action has to be performed. Just as one person stretches out his hand and gives while another puts forth his hand to receive. Similarly action and Grace occur simultaneously. Action itself is Grace, for if there is no Grace, from whence will right action emerge ? Any spiritual practice that we perform will always yield results. It release us faster from the bondage of our karma. All fear is nothing more than thoughts. If there is only One, there cannot be a second to be afraid of. If we look to our Self, as it is one, there is nothing else to be afraid of. To think that there is something outside ourselves is the cause of fear, but if we are firmly rooted in our own Reality, then there will be no fear, no doubt and no undesirable qualities. As all these are centred around the ego and the sense of a separate identity.

As long as man clamors for the I and mine, his works are as naught. When all love of the I and the mine is dead, then the work of the Lord is done. For work has no aim other than the gathering of knowledge. When that knowledge comes then work is put away.
The flower blooms for the fruit, when the fruit comes, the flower withers.
The musk is in the deer, but it seeks it not within. It wanders about in quest of grass. As a truth seeker's soul unfoldment progresses, it will be seen that behind all forms, only God exists. The personality will be transcended and the true cosmic reality of what is behind the personality will be directly known and fully experienced.
Outgoing is natural only in the beginning, ingoing in the end. But in reality the two are one, just like breathing in and out are one. Events in time and space such as birth and death, cause and effect, these may be taken as one; but the body and the embodied are not of the same order of reality. The body exists in time and space and is transient and limited, while the Indweller is timeless and spaceless, eternal and all-pervading. To identify the two is a grievous mistake and the cause of endless suffering. You can speak of the mind and body as one, but the body-mind is not the underlying reality. There is a universal power which is in control and is responsible. Stand without desire and fear, relinquishing all control and all responsibility. Just realize the One Mover behind all that moves and leave everything to Him. This is the shortest way to Reality. Now I will tell you the essence of millions of books: Consciousness alone is the truth. There is no such thing as the world or maya. They don't exist. There are no individual beings. There is only the play of Supreme Brahman and it is that supreme consciousness which plays as the world.
Forgetting your true Self is the greatest injury and all calamities and suffering flow from it. If you take care of the most important first then the lesser will take care of itself. You do not tidy up a dark room. You open the windows first. Letting in the light makes everything easy. So, let us wait with improving others until we have seen ourselves as we are and have changed. There is no need to turn round and round in endless questioning. Find yourself and everything else will fall into its proper place.” Om Kriya Babaji Namah Aum !!

B THE GREAT SILENCE - 14 UNANSWERED Q

Fourteen unanswered questions

A similar list of fourteen unanswered questions is identified in the Sanskrit Mahayana tradition.[1][3][note 2]

This list adds four additional questions to the list of ten questions identified in the early sutras; it is grouped into four categories.[1]

Questions concerning the existence of the world/universe in time:

Is it true that:
1. The world (loco) is eternal?[note 1]
2. The world is not eternal?
3. The world is both eternal and not eternal?
4. The world is neither eternal nor not eternal?[note 3]

Questions concerning the existence of the world/universe in space:

Is it true that:
5. The world is finite?
6. The world is infinite?
7. The world is both finite and infinite?
8. The world is niether finite or infinite?[note 3]

Questions referring to personal identity:

Is it true that:
9. The soul and the body are the same thing?
10. The soul and the body are different things?

Questions referring to life after death:

Is it true that:
11. A Realized One exists after death?
12. A Realized One doesn’t exist after death?
13. A Realized One both exists and doesn’t exist after death?
14. A Realized One neither exists nor doesn’t exist after death?

The Buddha remained silent when asked these fourteen questions.

Neutral Monism

First published Thu Feb 3, 2005; substantive revision Mon Oct 3, 2016

Neutral monism is a monistic metaphysics. It holds that ultimate reality is all of one kind. To this extent neutral monism is in agreement with the more familiar versions of monism: idealism and materialism. What distinguishes neutral monism from its monistic rivals is the claim that the intrinsic nature of ultimate reality is neither mental nor physical. This negative claim also captures the idea of neutrality: being intrinsically neither mental nor physical in nature ultimate reality is said to be neutral between the two.

Neutral monism is compatible with the existence of many neutral entities. And neutral monism is compatible with the existence of non-neutral entities—mental and material entities, for example—assuming that these non-neutral entities are, in some sense, derivative of the ultimate neutral entities. Most versions of neutral monism have been pluralist in both these respects. They were conceived as solutions to the mind-body problem. The goal was to close the apparent chasm between mental and physical entities by exhibiting both as consisting of groups of the more basic neutral entities.

Any version of neutral monism will therefore have the answer the following three questions:

  1. What are the neutral entities and what is their nature?
  2. What is the relationship of these neutral entities to matter?
  3. What is the relationship of these neutral entities to mind?

Well day is problematic. We're outside of time. People report a myriad of answers to the question “so what happened when you crossed over?” “When did you realize there was an afterlife?”

Everyone is different. Some are greeted by pets or animals to help them adjust. Some are met by children who were supposed to be born but were not. Some are met by loved ones, some met by people they thought they disliked, but realize they played a role.

Some are met by avatars, sometimes foljs from their religion, sometimes from other religions. Sometimes one on one with guides, sometimes crowds applauding wildly.

Then we have the issue of time. Roughly., 25 years here feels like ten minutes there. Two months “like a comma.”

People get acclimated at their own pace, then the fun begins. Read “Architecture of the Afterlife “ for descriptions of what thats about.
