TITANIC, HEPATITIS AND STROKE

/////////////////Chronic hepatitis B infection was associated with higher liver-related mortality.

//////////////..........In humans, instead of the pineal sac wandering up towards an eye on the top of our heads, we have the pineal gland which stays down near the rest of our brain. The pineal gland also puts out melatonin, and is studied in sleep research. It also puts out many other hormones which focus on neurological regulation — the most famous of which is serotonin. The proper functioning of the pineal gland keeps people focused, happy, awake in the day and asleep at night, and prevents neuro-degeneration as people age. It seems that even if we could have a third eye, it would be at the expense of being able to sleep, be happy, and keep mentally fit.

/////////////////////..........SCIAM.......Roughly 200 million years ago, at least half the species on Earth died off over the course of about 100,000 years, both on land and in sea. This mass extinction, at the boundary between the Triassic and Jurassic periods and one of five known such events in Earth's geologic history, set the stage for dinosaurs to rise to prominence and dominate the planet's terrestrial life for the next 135 million years.

The omnipresence of the English language points to this. Her peoples’ DNA is widely spread. Sites all over the world bear British names. Many developing countries have frontiers, often awkward ones, negotiated between Britain and other powers. The Industrial Revolution started in Britain and expanded from there. Many of the world’s railways bear witness to this. Cricket and association football may be considered, if not its greatest contributions to world civilisation, at least the ones that are least alloyed. The constitutions and legal systems of several countries bear the mark of Britain’s. There are some gaps. Its cuisine doesn’t appear to have caught on so widely. Other countries have been far more influential artistically, with the exception of literature.

//////////////////////////DREAMY DETACHMENT INSIDE HEAD

//////////////////////////Eastwood and colleagues define boredom as "an aversive state of wanting, but being unable, to engage in satisfying activity," which arises from failures in one of the brain's attention networks.

Specifically, we're bored when:
We have difficulty paying attention to the internal information (e.g., thoughts or feelings) or external information (e.g., environmental stimuli) required for participating in satisfying activity
We're aware of the fact that we're having difficulty paying attention
We believe that the environment is responsible for our aversive state (e.g., "this task is boring," "there is nothing to do").

/////////////////////////////Boredom is, in the Darwinian sense, an adaptive emotion. Its purpose, that is, may be designed to help one flourish.

//////////////////////////////TOOHEY......... simple boredom, which occurs regularly and doesn’t require that you be able to name it, and existential boredom, a grab-bag condition that is “neither an emotion, nor a mood, nor a feeling” but, rather, “an impressive intellectual formulation” that has much in common with depression and is highly self-aware, something Toohey calls the most self-reflective of conditions

///////////////////////////Boredom is an emotion usually associated with a nourished body: like satiety, it is not normally for the starving.

///////////////////////////////As fast as the new is experienced…it is liable to become boring. The new becomes a variant of the infinite. It recedes infinitely.

///////////////////////////////Infinity is of course temporal as well as spatial. Time has a very interesting relationship with boredom and its representations. We have all experienced the sluggishness of time when we have been confined in boring situations. According to one of the late Clement Freud’s famous witticisms, ‘if you resolve to give up smoking, drinking and loving you don’t actually live longer, it just seems longer.’

//////////////////////////boredom appears to be the polar opposite of what Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi has famously termed flow — a state of intense focus you enter whilst absorbed in an enthralling task, when you lose track of time.

///////////////////////////////FUC=FACING UNCERTAINTY
Ask “what’s the worst-case scenario”? If you’re exposing yourself, getting out of your comfortable environment, leaving behind security … it can be scary, but when you think about what is the worst thing that is likely to happen, usually it’s not that bad. If you lost all your possessions today in a disaster, how bad would that be? How would you cope? What opportunities would there be? What new things could you invent from this blank slate?

//////////////////////////////WILFUL BLINDNESS

///////////////////////////////University of Cambridge recently teamed up to develop a model that would accurately represent the state of the Earth and of human beings over the past 120,000 years. According to this model, even though Homo sapiens developed in Africa over 200,000 years ago, humans didn't leave the continent until 70,000 years ago, and it took us another 55,000 years to reach all the other continents (excluding Antarctica). The overriding reason for the delay, according to the study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, was climate change.

//////////////////////////////EAT, DRINK AND BE MINDFUL

/////////////////////////////Vegetable oil’s link to endocannabinoids is just one example of newfound and surprising ways that foods can confuse calorie-sensing networks and foster obesity — in some cases by damaging the brain. Especially troubling: Excess body weight itself can exaggerate the risk of the brain telling a well-fueled body that it is running on empty.

//////////////////////////////As the brain damage became chronic, the arcuate nucleus appeared to lose its sensitivity to hormonal cues about how much body fat exists, Schwartz says. The brain interprets a reduced signal to mean that there is not enough body fat, and thus delays any command to stop eating. “Because you get less bang for the buck when you eat, in terms of satiety,” he says, “you eat bigger meals.”

//////////////////////////////////HAPPINESS=KINDNESS
A study in 2005 by Hebrew University in Israel noted that there is a link between kindness and a gene that releases dopamine. Dopamine is a chemical in the brain that makes us feel happy. So, not only does kindness make the person on the receiving end feel good, it makes the person being kind feel good as well.

EINSTEIN, FEYNMAN AND THE ATOM

/////////////////////1905......EINSTEIN....Brownian motion. When you put specks of particles of pollen seed in water you can see them jiggling about. What, he wondered, is the life force inside water that makes them do that? He proved that it was the thermal vibrations of water molecules. This was the first mathematical proof that atoms exist. If that was all he’d ever done in his career he could have retired famous.

//////////////////////CONFIRMATION BIAS.....ERROL MORRIS....."We see on the basis of what we believe, not the other way around"

//////////////////////EINSTEIN.....won the prize for the photoelectric effect. If you shine ultra-violet light at a metal surface the light can knock out electrons from the surface of the metal. So the light has an oomph to it. At the time people thought light was a wave and if they sent brighter light then electrons would be knocked out with greater energy. But it didn’t happen. Einstein understood that light isn’t exactly a wave. It’s made of particles, what we call photons. The only way you can knock off electrons more energetically is to change the wavelength. He won it for this because to win the Nobel Prize your theory has to be backed up by experimental evidence. Relativity was, at the time, just a theory.

///////////////////////////////////JIM AL KHALILI....BROWSER

//////////////////////////////////JAK.....Light will travel at the same speed according to all observers no matter how fast they are moving in relation to each other. So, if you stay still but I head off chasing a beam of light in a space rocket that travels at three quarters of the speed of light then you would expect that when I looked out of the window it would appear to be going more slowly than it would to you on the ground. But, actually, we both see it moving away from us at the same speed.

////////////////////////////////SPACE SWTRETCHES.....easiest way to explain why this happens is to think speed is distance over time. So, if speed (of light) is constant and time changes then distance has to change too. If you are travelling very fast, close to light speed, then your clocks will appear to outside observers to be running slower and you will look squashed up and flatter. This is not an optical illusion.

//////////////DTR TCH=Aqua regia (lit. "royal water"), aqua regis (lit. "king's water"), or nitro-hydrochloric acid is a highly corrosive mixture of acids, a fuming yellow or red solution. The mixture is formed by freshly mixing concentrated nitric acid and hydrochloric acid,[1] usually in a volume ratio of 1:3. It was named so because it can dissolve the so-called royal or noble metals, gold and platinum. However, titanium, iridium, ruthenium, tantalum, osmium, rhodium and a few other metals are capable of withstanding its corrosive properties WIKI

///////////////////EINSTEIN ON NEWTON.....What Einstein said was that actually anything with mass, which therefore has a gravitational pull, actually curves space around it. When the earth orbits around the sun it is just following the curved path in space-time

////////////////////////////............JAK.....black holes?

When a massive star runs out of nuclear fuel, has no more hydrogen to change into helium (this is thermonuclear fusion), it stops shining and there is nothing to stop it collapsing under its own weight. It has been inflated by heat and energy but then it collapses. If a star is massive enough it collapses under its own weight so violently, getting denser and denser and curving space around it until it literally punches a hole in the universe.

///////////////////////////QNTM MECH=It’s counterintuitive and weird but we’ve learned to accept it. Quantum mechanics is hugely accurate – most of modern scientific development is based on it and on what it tells us about the subatomic world, but at its heart it says that an atom can be in two places at once. We’ve learned to live with that.”

////////////////////////////////ENTROPY=If things are left to their own devices they decay and unwind and disorder increases. If you take a pack of cards in the right order and shuffle it they will get mixed up. That doesn’t work the other way round. If you take a disordered pack of cards and shuffle it they won’t come back up in the right order. Things do not spontaneously order themselves. So, the question is,...”

////////////////////////////d/r. Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, has made the case that "food and drug addictions have much in common, particularly in the way that both disrupt the parts of the brain involved in pleasure and self-control." In experiments, Princeton researchers have found that taking rats off sugary food is like taking them off an opium regimen.

/////////////////////////////We don’t abuse lettuce, turnips and oranges. But when a highly processed food is eaten, the body may go haywire. SURVIVAL, ANESTHESIA AND IDENTITY

///////////////////////////Puranic period (c. CE 300-1200) saw the rise of post-Vedic religion and the evolution of what R. C. Majumdar calls "synthetic Hinduism

//////////////////////////GENERATOR,OPERATOR,DESTROYER, TRINITY

//////////////////////////Hindu texts is to divide into Śruti ("revealed") and Smriti ("remembered") texts. These texts discuss theology, philosophy, mythology, rituals and temple building among other topics. Major scriptures include the Vedas, Upanishads, Purāṇas, Mahābhārata, Rāmāyaṇa, Bhagavad Gītā and Āgamas

///////////////////////////..........word Hindu is derived (through Persian) from the Sanskrit word Sindhu, the historic local appellation for the Indus River in the northwestern part of the Indian subcontinent, which is first mentioned in the Rig Veda

///////////////////////////..........word Hindu was borrowed into European languages from the Arabic term al-Hind, referring to the land of the people who live across the River Indus,[14] itself from the Persian term Hindū, which refers to all Indians. By the 13th century, Hindustān emerged as a popular alternative name of India, meaning the "land of Hindus

///////////////////////////NOT AWARE OF BODY WHEN ON COMPUTER-AUTO ANESTHESIA

//////////////////////////////.........Hinduism also occurs sporadically in Sanskrit texts such as the later Rajataranginis of Kashmir (Hinduka, c. 1450), some 16th-18th century Bengali Gaudiya Vaishnava texts, including Chaitanya Charitamrita and Chaitanya Bhagavata, usually to contrast Hindus with Yavanas or Mlecchas

It is sometimes referred to as henotheistic (i.e., involving devotion to a single god while accepting the existence of others)

///////////////////////Bhakti Yoga (the path of love and devotion)
Karma Yoga (the path of right action)
Rāja Yoga (the path of meditation)
Jñāna Yoga (the path of wisdom)

//////////////////////////////.........Polytheists do not always worship all the gods equally, but can be Henotheists, specializing in the worship of one particular deity. Other polytheists can be Kathenotheists, worshipping different deities at different times.

//////////////////////////////...........Polytheism was the typical form of religion during the Bronze Age and Iron Age, up to the Axial Age and the gradual development of monotheism or pantheism, and atheism. It is well documented in historical religions of Classical Antiquity, especially Greek polytheism and Roman polytheism, and after the decline of classical polytheism in tribal religions such as Germanic polytheism or Slavic polytheism. It continues into the modern period in traditions such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Shintoism, Chinese folk religion

/////////////////////////////........Hellenistic religion may still be regarded as polytheistic, but with strong monistic components, and monotheism finally emerges out of Hellenistic traditions in Late Antiquity in the form of Neoplatonism and Christian theology.

So also they have to learn about grammar, rhetoric, and other stuff that has been "dead" for centuries.

And there, immediately, you have somethng that analytical science cannot deal with, as you cannot analyse an experience. In principle, you could examine everything that happened inside me just now when I walked into the living-room, but the results would have no relation to what I felt at that moment. It is similar to the non-relation between brain events and language. If you filmed what happened inside my head when I said something, or was intending to say say something, you could not say from that analysis that I had said, or was intending to say, "Hello, Bonzo!"

sufficiency principle. Generally, when making a decision, we weigh how much we know against how much we need to know to make a confident judgment about a topic. If this gap between what we know and what we need to know is small, heuristic-style thinking is more likely. Conversely, if there is a large gap, we need to expend more mental resources to close it, thus encouraging systematic thinking. This Scrooge-like mental calculus determines how much we process the information we are inundated with everyday. And we readily recognize this game of cognitive economy, especially when browsing the web. For example, going through a stuffed RSS feed can be a fairly disengaged experience, with only the topics that are interesting, confusing, or contentious garnering real attention. This “surf or stay” mentality is easily grafted onto the HSM.

A sudden death hits you like an explosion, Myers explains, and sends you into shock, whereas a slow decline "arrives more like a glacier, massive and unstoppable, grinding you down." Dealing with the symptoms of anticipatory grief gets harder with each passing day.

LOSING START

///////////////.........The traditional explanation for our nine-month gestation period and helpless newborns is that natural selection favored childbirth at an earlier stage of fetal development to accommodate selection for both large brain size and upright locomotion—defining characteristics of the human lineage. In this view, adaptations to bipedalism restricted the width of the birth canal and, hence, the size of the baby that can pass through it. Human babies are thus born when their brains are less than 30 percent of adult brain size so that they can fit through the narrow passageway. They then continue development outside of the womb, with brain size nearly doubling in the first year.

///////////////..........“Maybe human newborns are adapted to soaking up all this cultural stuff and maybe being born earlier lets you do this,” she muses. “Maybe being born earlier is better if you’re a cultural animal.” Food for thought.

////////////////The World Health Organisation also issued a global alert this week over the cases of hantavirus linked to Yosemite, and advised travellers to avoid exposure to rodents.

The virus can lead to severe breathing difficulties and death. Early flu-like symptoms include headache, fever, muscle aches, shortness of breath and coughing.

There is no cure for the lung disease, which kills over a third of those infected, but early detection through blood tests greatly increases survival rates.

Hantavirus is carried in rodent faeces, urine and saliva that can mix with dust and be inhaled by humans, especially in small, confined spaces with poor ventilation. People also can become infected by eating contaminated food, touching tainted surfaces or being bitten by infected rodents.

The disease has never been known to be transmitted between humans.

Hantavirus previously was known to have infected only two Yosemite visitors, one in 2000 and another in 2010, both at higher elevations in the park.
