If you look up the word yoga on Google’s “NGram” search engine, which graphs the appearance of words in millions of books published from 1500 to the present, you will ɹnd that it is virtually absent from the English language until about 1900.23 At that point the curve slowly begins to rise. By 1920 it is clear that yoga is becoming more popular, and by about 1960 the usage curve goes exponential. The explosive trend upward shows no signs of slowing, and it graphically reveals that what was once considered a fringe topic within the Western world has become mainstream.
