Another approach to transcendence in the modern age is extreme sports. In ancient times putting oneself at risk for adventure wasn’t sport—it was called daily life, or catching dinner. But today climbing mountains, white-water rafting, surɹng the big waves … these are a siren call for both the hardy and the foolish. One of the draws is the ecstatic feelings that can accompany conquering the impossible. Another is the lure of transcendence. Maria Coʃey explored the connections between extreme sports and transcendence in her book Explorers of the Infinite. The book’s subtitle says it all: The Secret Spiritual Lives of Extreme Athletes, and What They Reveal About Near-Death Experiences, Psychic Communication, and Touching the Beyond. In story after story, Coʃey recounted how adventurers who pushed themselves to the limit experienced the whole panoply of mystical and psychic phenomena. After recounting a harrowing tale, the athlete telling his or her story would often add in hushed tones: “I have no doubt that it was real.… I was not hallucinating and I’m not crazy”
