If I think as hard as I can, I might be able to recollect a memory from when I was 5 years old, but I can't remember anything from the countless previous lives that I have lived.

While I'm sure all of us want to achieve nirvana, I'm just as confident in saying that few of us probably do, especially in this day and age. Why stress over being reborn when none of us remember our past lives and the struggles we had in them?

Imagine if there is a person who is 5 minutes amnesiac, every 5 minutes reset memory.

Why bother to end such a condition? That's basically what you're asking.

It's suffering, even for that 5 minutes, he was eating good vegan ice cream. Because at other 5 minutes, he might had been boiling water, about to pour and memory reset, got burned.

And he couldn't make a video to explain to himself about the memory reset due to so little time. But if he walk the path to enlightenment, he could get out.

Actually we carry all our sankharas from all our previous births.

You can find some sankharas on the surface, like a preference of sweet things for an example.

Once you exhaust all of them through meditation, you will exhaust all others Sankharas of the last life.

Sankharas influence the five aggregates.

The constitution of the five aggregates changes after death, add sankharas you have destroyed or added in that birth, add some karmas, now five aggregates will change.

Then they reconstitute, recombine together to form the next body. So its natural that we can't remember our past life. The building blocks are all morphed and became an entirely new thing for that birth.

So in a sense yeah, it's not that bad to forget the past life. But the cause of sufferings still remain, the sankharas remain. So new sufferings keep coming to us.

Some sankharas can become bodily disease like cancer. This is speculation on my part.

Some sankharas can become different type of bodily pain. So once we have a way to get rid of sankharas, we should consider this as a blessing. If we can meditate and walk into the light then we should take the opportunity.

The Buddha said: “I see four types of people in this world. The first type is running from darkness towards darkness. The second is running from brightness towards darkness. The third is running from darkness towards brightness. And the fourth is running from brightness towards brightness.”

If given a chance, what type of person you would like to be?

To me this question ties in to the idea that Buddhism doesn't really offer a 'meaning of life' narrative. The Buddha made no claims about the 'goals' of life. If anything: he sought to describe the nature of reality, explains suffering is part and parcel of it, as is rebirth, and offers a path to cessation of that suffering.

If you could find/be convinced of a meaning in life that equally provides a context and relation to the suffering, which alleviates it, I can imagine you'd be less worried about attaining enlightenment. Although your next life, if you believe in that, might reset that and you find your'self' suffering all over again.

I personally like the Zen pragmatism here: don't worry about past or future lives: be here now and wake up. If that doesn't happen, your diligent practice will be fruitful in case of rebirth.
