Why did Ramana Maharshi say that no sadhana is needed for liberation?

THAT’S WRONG!

He never said that. It is unbelievable that every answer assumes He told so. Please amend them, or you would be misleading innocent readers who trust your words.

On the contrary, He approved of all the paths of sadhana, which are bhakti, jnana, karma, and raja yogas.

Claiming no need of Sadhana, mocking sadhus, making fun of traditional paths and terms such as ‘seekers’, and dogmatically preaching ‘no effort is needed since you are already that’, all these are peddled by the woke neo nondualists.

Please do not tie these to Ramana Maharishi just because these woke ‘tube’lightened guys are quoting Maharishi, just to sound credible.

Remember that the devil can cite the scriptures. A few people pull His quotes out of context and claim all sorts of things.

He invariably instructed ‘Atma Vichara’ or ‘Self-enquiry’ as the direct path. Is that not a Sadhana in itself?

He firmly said that this was the direct path, and He very much instructed seekers to follow other paths if they find this direct path difficult.

Although [Advaita is] the ultimate doctrine and [Self-Enquiry is] the supreme and most direct path, this, throughout the ages, has not been the most popular, because for most people it seemed too austere and difficult. (Anon., “Intro” to Ramana Maharshi, Five Hymns to Sri Arunachala)

This is suitable only for ripe souls. The rest should follow different methods according to the state of their minds. (Ramana Maharshi, Spiritual Instructions, Chapter 2, Question 2.)

Effortless and choiceless awareness is our real nature. If we can attain it or be in that state, it is all right. But one cannot reach it without effort, the effort of deliberate meditation. All the age-long vasanas carry the mind outward and turn it to external objects. All such thoughts have to be given up and the mind turned inward. For that, effort is necessary for most peopleOf course everybody, every book says, “Be quiet or still”. But it is not easy. That is why all this effort is necessaryEven if we find one who has at once achieved the mauna or Supreme state, you may take it that the effort necessary has already been finished in a previous life. So that, effortless and choiceless awareness is reached only after deliberate meditation (Day by Day with Bhagwan 11–1–46)

-Ramana Maharishi

He even debated in favor of Japa/chanting. What more?

Question : People give some names to God and say that the name is sacred and that repetitions of the name bestow merit on the individual. Can it be true?

Ramana Maharshi: Why not? You bear a name to which you answer. But your body was not born with that name written on it, nor did it say to anyone that it bore such and such a name. And yet a name is given to you and you answer to that name, because you have identified yourself with the name. Therefore the name signified something and it is not a mere fiction. Similarly, God’s name is effective. Repetition of the name is remembrance of what it signifies. Hence its merit.

During His times and even now to date, there are Vedic chants, ritualistic worships to deities including His Samadhi now, annadhanam to sadhus every day, and self-enquiry being practiced every day in His Ashram.

Apart from his Samadhi hall, there is even a separate meditation hall in the Ashram since recently where the cot bed and His large photo are placed, before which devotees sit around and meditate.

Bhagwan Ramana Maharishi is rooted in tradition and was in favor of all the Spiritual paths, and in accordance with His core teaching, Sadhana is sine-qua-non for Self-realization. As quoted above, He went to the extent of asserting that if someone attained Self-realization without Sadhana, he must have done the Sadhana in his previous births. That’s how strongly He advocated Sadhana. Please do not believe the false propaganda of a few woke tubelightened neo-nondualists here.
