important of all archetypes, is the ‘Self.’ Jung defined the Self as the totality of the psyche – both conscious and unconscious segments – as well as its center.11 The Self is thus the center of the total personality just as the ego is the center of our ordinary experiences. Because of its all-encompassing nature, ‘the self is a union of opposites par excellence.’12 As such, it transcends bivalence and literalism. Yet, the definition above does not actually describe the Self, which Jung considered ineffable; beyond rational apprehension.13 What the Self really is remains, therefore, a mystery
