AI can increasingly handle:
- symbolic manipulation and calculations,
- proving some classes of theorems,
- searching enormous spaces of possibilities,
- suggesting conjectures and proof strategies.
But mathematicians still decide what is worth asking, which definitions are useful, what a result means, and which problems matter.
And there’s an interesting twist: when machines become dramatically better at solving problems, mathematicians may shift from being calculators to being architects of mathematical ideas—designing the frameworks in which machines can discover things humans couldn’t practically find alone.
So the question may become less “Can AI do mathematics?” and more “What does mathematics become when humans no longer have to be the best problem-solvers in the room?”
