Rupert Spira says everything (the world, body, mind…) is made only out of Consciousness. I am puzzled. Does it mean that there are no forms as such, that forms are illusory, it is only Consciousness appearing as forms such as world, body, mind…?
Since the question was asked by an apparent but very-real-seeming brain, in this apparent but very-real-seeming ‘waking dream,’ the most direct analogy is always our ‘sleeping dreams.’
Everything you saw in your dreams last night - the scenes, the dream-you walking through them, other people, nature, cars, buildings - were they real? No. Just illusions with no substance. Immediately re-discovered when you awaken in the morning.
“Wow! That seemed really real, even enough to frighten or pain me. But, ahh no, it was just a dream.”
What you awaken into is also a dream. Which also feels unquestionably ‘real.’
The insubstantial thing doing the questioning, the mind, is also an illusion. It’s literally just one more non-existent phantom integral to the dream. But “we” believe in our minds are separate, and “we” believe mind’s judgments and evaluations so much, we take for granted this world, forms, body, mind and events are 100% real.
That same ‘mind’ is afraid if it questions this ‘reality’ - “Who or What am I. What is this world really made of?” - it will step out of society’s agreement field, loose their job, home or family, or even go quite insane.
There are very few in the world of philosophy, spirituality or physics who dare to truly investigate it. Einstein said: “The true measure of a human being is determined primarily by the measure and sense in which he has attained liberation from the idea of a false self.” Nisargadatta said: “We believe we are body-minds containing consciousness, when in fact the opposite is true - we are Consciousness containing bodies.”
But the mind is a subject-object machine, perceptually. So it will look out into the world/universe, see itself as the Subject and all it purveys as Objects, and conclude it therefore must be real. Until & if one penetrates beyond mind, belief and agreement field, this discovery that this is all the Dream will remain illogical and incomprehensible.
We say “If,” because 99.9% of illusory ‘selves’ will not even contemplate this. They will just go on with their supposedly ‘real’ material lives. Or if they do occasionally consider these questions and hear clear answers from Rupert Spira, Nisargadatta, Einstein, Buddha, Ramana Maharshi, Hume & Nietzsche, et al, they will protest, misunderstand or simply turn away and return to their material concerns.
We are God in disguise. We are Being or Consciousness dreaming of worlds and bodies…for no reason, just pure delight.
