TURIYA- DIFFERENT FROM DEEP SLEEP BLANKNESS

###########################

In Hindu philosophy, turiya (Sanskrit: तुरीय, meaning "the fourth") or caturiya, chaturtha, is pure consciousness. Turiya is the background that underlies and transcends the three common states of consciousness. The states of consciousness are: waking consciousness, dreaming, and dreamless sleep - Wikipedia.

TURIYA or the fourth state is that state in which the individual soul rests in his own Sat-Chit-Ananda Svarupa or the highest Brahmic consciousness during Nirvikalpa Samadhi. There are three states, Jagrat, Swapna and Sushupti, for a Jiva who is whirling in the mire of Samsara. Turiya is that state which transcends all these three states. Hence the Turiya or the fourth. Turiya is Atman or Brahman - Swami Sivananda.

Thus, there are four levels of consciousness.

  1. Jagrat - waking state
  2. Swapna - dream
  3. Sushupti - deep sleep
  4. Turiya - Pure consciousness

The first three stage make some sense. Are they stages in which we fall asleep?

If so what is the fourth stage? It is it a stage of near death experience? How can we have pure consciousness in near death experience?

Before trying to understand what Turiya is we must first keep one fact in mind. Scriptures are about the seven stage muscle tone based human thinking mechanism. This mechanism is not compatible with languages. Therefore, all scriptures are written allegorically. If we take the literal meanings of words in scriptures we will endup with wrong interpretations.

To understand scriptures you need semi automatic force. Otherwise you will endup having just the literal meaning and you will ignore the intended meaning. Unfortunately, in this era most people have manual force only.

THE SEVEN LEVEL MUSCLE TONE BASED THINKING

Human beings are created to use seven stage muscle tone based thinking and not Reasoning, which everyone uses.

The seven stage thinking has a level of consciousness associated with each stage. Where to accommodate four more levels of consciousness.

The extra four stages of consciousness are associated with the first stage of thinking i.e. daydreaming. It is the state at which Atman meets Nirguna Brahman, at our Positive attitude.

Thus, all the four stages are in the early stage of daydreaming only i.e. stage 1. They are meant to convert a daydream into an eternal bliss.

Why should so much attention be paid to this junction?

  1. AWAKE

In this stage we are awake. More precisely we are realistic. We see a Bugatti car. We know that it belongs to someone else.

Impulsively we decide to buy it. However, when we come to know its price we give up the idea without any hesitation. However, the idea won’t go away.

We enter the stage of dream.

2. DREAM

Our aim in this stage is to prevent the idea from becoming a action. In our daydream we change the color of the car. Thus, the yellow Bugatti car in the real world doesn’t make us to react.

3. DEEP SLEEP

In this stage the idea has more features of night dream. However, we are not asleep.

The day dream of the Bugatti is now linked to our other dreams in which we own a private jet, yacht, etc. Thus, the chances of we reacting to the yellow Bugatti in the real world is reduced further.

4. TURIYA

This is the stage of Nirguna Brahman. Our emotions and movements are abolished completely. What all that is remaining is our ability to feel our emotions. What we feel can’t be seen by others. The yellow Bugatti now produces the combined pleasure of all of our daydreams. This is what we call eternal bliss.

Nirguna Brahman ensures that we don’t react to the yellow Bugatti or the red private jet in our daydream. What all we have is eternal bliss.

Thus, a Bugatti car belonging to someone else is producing more pleasure in us than in the owner.

If we try to convert our daydream into an action the idea would become realistic. We would realize that our pocket is empty.

Since daydreaming consumes very little power we can keep the idea of the car in that state for a very long time. One day we can become a proud owner of that car.

Thus, Turiya has enabled us to be have eternal bliss and yet be ambitious and realistic.

Consciousness is not chimerical, or a conceptual abstraction, but a vital principle of existence.

###############################

There are four states of human consciousness – waking

(jagarita), dream (svapna), deep-sleep (sushupti) and the transcendental (turiya).

############################

########################

While the first three states(avasthatraya),

respectively called vaishvanara, taijasa and prajna (Mandukya Upanishad 2), are ‘mere appearances’, and subject to modification, the turiya or the fourth (chaturtham), is changeless and abiding, since it is the ultimate reality – the all-pervasive source of everything.

ATMAN IS I

#######################

In a higher sense, turiya is not a separate realm as it is the self itself, possessed of all the four quarters (chatushpat).

Consciousness, in the waking state, is associated with gross body (sthula sharira); in the dream state, with subtle body (sukshma sharira), and in the deep-sleep state, with causal body (karana sharira). All the three are experienced in the waking state, which relates to things external. The deep-sleep state has in it the seeds of the first two. However, consciousness alternates generally between the waking state and the dream state. Spiritual seekers ponder over turiya alone.
