The flaw in this apparent paradox is the assumption that God’s purpose in creation is our comfort.. The presence of suffering means that cannot be true! So what is God’s intent for his creation?
According to Irenaeus,
this life is the vale of soul-making. Adam was a child, whose fall was the first faulty step in growing a soul. God is still working with humanity in order to bring it from material, biological life to a state of self-realization in divine love, spiritual life. What kind of environment would fashion moral beings, through their own free insights and responses, into children of God? We should not judge this world by the quantity of pleasure and pain in it but by its fitness for making souls.
We should not be surprised that the world is not paradise, nor should we conclude that God is not good or powerful. Instead, we should investigate how all the world works to grow our spiritual depth and to increase our moral character.
Viewed this way, the immense responsibility and accountability each of us has for our own sanctification is terrifying! Every time we sin, our soul shrinks, and eventually it could disappear. But we do have a choice, we can grow and prosper. And God is most willing to help if we simply ask!
I learnt in High School that when a butterfly is struggling to get out of the cocoon and you cut the cocoon to help it out, the butterfly dies. You have to let the butterfly struggle, because the struggle forces blood into the wings so they can spread them and fly. The struggles we go through are necessary to make us strong enough to soar through life. — Kerwin Rae
