"Consciousness is not an emergent property of the brain but an irreducible aspect of reality, beyond computation and measurement." FF

Summary of Irreducible: Consciousness, Life, Computers, and Human Nature by Federico Faggin

  • Author & Background

    • Federico Faggin, inventor of the microprocessor, transitioned from technology to exploring consciousness.

    • He questions the assumption that artificial intelligence can replicate human consciousness.

  • Core Argument

    • Consciousness is not a byproduct of computation or physical processes.

    • It is irreducible, meaning it cannot be broken down into simpler components.

  • Critique of AI & Computational Theories

    • AI and computers process information, but they lack subjective experience.

    • Consciousness is qualitative (based on perception and meaning), whereas computers operate in a quantitative realm.

  • Nature of Consciousness

    • Suggests consciousness is fundamental to reality, much like space, time, and energy.

    • Explores the idea that it could be non-local (not confined to the brain).

  • Personal Journey & Insights

    • Shares his shift from a materialist worldview (science and technology) to one that includes spiritual and philosophical dimensions.

    • Discusses personal experiences that led him to question mainstream scientific views.

  • Implications for Science & Humanity

    • Calls for a new scientific paradigm that integrates consciousness as a primary aspect of existence.

    • Encourages deeper exploration beyond materialism to understand the true nature of being.

FF-Irreducible: "We are eternal, conscious beings rather than perishable bodies, and we are here to learn crucial aspects of ourselves by interacting with each other in the physical universe that we have co created for this very purpose."

I was in the psych ward once. And a psychotic woman yelled at me: "bacteria, fungi, protozoa, nematodes, microarthropds!". To anyone else that was meaningless psychotic babble. But to me it was deeply meaningful. I had just spent the last 4 months taking a soil biology course online and the instructor would say that phrase often. When out of the psych ward I asked the woman if she had ever seen this online content. She said no and appeared to have no recollection of what she had said. This phrase is a very rare phrase and not common knowledge. I did not make this up. Assuming this is true it is evidence for consciousness beyond the material. A consciousness that used her unconscious to speak directly to me. The people in the psych ward are so drastically misunderstood in the first world and mistreated. It is a deep travesty

It looks like you’re referring to different groups of microorganisms and tiny organisms found in soil ecosystems, microbiomes, or other biological environments. Here’s a quick breakdown of each:

  • Bacteria – Single-celled microorganisms that play essential roles in decomposition, nitrogen fixation, and disease prevention.

  • Fungi – Decomposers that break down organic matter and form symbiotic relationships with plants (e.g., mycorrhizal fungi).

  • Protozoa – Single-celled eukaryotes that feed on bacteria and help regulate microbial populations in soil and water.

  • Nematodes – Microscopic roundworms that can be beneficial (nutrient cycling) or harmful (plant parasites).

  • Microarthropods – Tiny invertebrates (e.g., mites, springtails) that help break down organic material and improve soil aeration.

Are you asking about these in a specific context, like soil health, microbiology, or disease?
