There is a Pāli verse (based on the Suttas), that conveniently summarises the Buddhist practice of the Four Sublime, Unlimited States (social emotions, the Brahma-vihāras): Goodwill (Mettā), Compassion (Karunā), Altruistic Joy (Muditā), and Equanimity (Upekkhā).
It goes as follows: "May all beings be well & happy (Mettā); may they be free from suffering (Karunā); may they not be deprived of their wealth, rightly gained (Muditā); all beings are owners of their karma (Upekkhā)."
It's been said that all four of these attitudes, stem from divine love (Mettā), as it meets people in different states. Mettā, meets with an equal; it becomes Karunā when it meets someone sorrowful; when it meets someone doing well, it becomes Muditā; and when it meets someone neutral, it becomes Upekkhā.
Mettā (goodwill, kindness, friendliness, love), is the antidote to hate & illwill. Karunā (compassion, empathy), counters cruelty & harmfulness. Muditā (feeling happy for people, rejoicing in their merits), conquers jealousy & envy. Upekkhā (equanimity, peace), overcomes restlessness, conceit & ignorance.
