Seal Appeal: Why We Find Seals "Cute"

According to Matt Bell, the evolutionary reason we find seals cute is largely a biological "accident":

  • The "Baby" Template: Humans are highly evolved to find their own offspring cute—featuring traits like big, forward-facing eyes and round faces. This triggers an instinctual mechanism to care for them.

  • The Accidental Overlap: Because of this built-in mental template, humans automatically find anything with similar traits cute. Seals happen to naturally possess big, forward-facing eyes and facial structures that partially fit this baby-like template, completely by evolutionary coincidence.

  • The False Smile: Humans are prone to anthropomorphizing animals. Because the ends of a seal's jaw turn upward, we mistakenly perceive them as "smiling" at us.

  • The Counter-Argument: Despite their appeal, seals also possess traits commonly associated with large predators (which they are). Their large teeth and calculating look mean they can easily veer from looking "cute" to looking like an animal that "could take a nasty bite out of you."
