BICYCLE PHYSICS
Another important natural symmetry is “rotational symmetry”: the uniformity associated with spinning a completely circular wheel, wholly free of impediments and other external influences. Imagine a bicycle’s tires effortlessly turning as they roll along a country lane. The conservation law matched with that symmetry is conservation of angular momentum. It is so powerful that it helps keep the bicycle upright when it is moving. Whirling bicycle wheels resist toppling over because it would involve a change in angular momentum. Maintaining constancy of angular momentum thereby preserves stability.
