The idea of unseen, extra dimensions means that there are neighboring spaces only a minuscule distance away from us at all times. Even if they are wholly inaccessible, that is truly mind-blowing. Philosophically, one might wonder, is that too dear a price to pay to avoid uncertainty in nature? Einstein, at various points in his career, didn’t seem to think so, despite being far more of a realist in his youth.
