Bhagavad Gita Chapter 2, Verse 14 (2.14):
Sanskrit
mātrā-sparśās tu kaunteya
śītoṣṇa-sukha-duḥkha-dāḥ
āgamāpāyino ’nityās
tāṁs titikṣasva bhārata
Common English translation:
“O son of Kunti, the contact of the senses with their objects gives rise to cold and heat, pleasure and pain. These experiences come and go; they are temporary. Endure them patiently.”
Meaning in context:
In this verse, Krishna tells Arjuna that emotional and physical experiences—comfort, discomfort, joy, sorrow—are transient. The instruction is not to suppress feeling, but to recognize its temporary nature and avoid being ruled by it. This verse sets up a central theme of steadiness (titikṣā, forbearance or endurance) amid changing circumstances.
A concise takeaway:
“Pleasure and pain are passing conditions; cultivate steadiness through them.”
