A commonly cited quote attributed to Ramana Maharshi on predetermination is:
“Whatever is destined not to happen will not happen, try as you may. Whatever is destined to happen will happen, do what you may to prevent it. This is certain. The best course, therefore, is to remain silent.”
This quote is often used to express the idea that events in life are predetermined (or governed by destiny).
However, Ramana Maharshi’s teaching is more nuanced than simple fatalism. He also emphasized self-inquiry (“Who am I?”) and taught that while the body and life circumstances may unfold according to destiny (prarabdha karma), one’s inner freedom comes from realizing the Self rather than identifying with the doer.
In essence:
- Outer events: may be predetermined.
- Inner freedom: lies in how deeply you identify with the ego versus awareness itself.
So his teaching is not merely “everything is fixed,” but: peace comes from seeing what is beyond the one who feels trapped by destiny.
