C X Your experience is evidence about reality—not reality itself.

This is a much more defensible thesis than the title initially suggests, but it mixes several established findings in neuroscience with stronger philosophical claims that are still debated. The most useful way to unpack it is to separate what we know, what researchers infer, and what is rhetorical/philosophical extrapolation.

1. The central idea: perception is a model, not a photograph

The brain doesn't receive a finished representation of the external world.

Instead, sensory systems receive limited, noisy signals, and the brain constructs an interpretation of those signals. Vision is a particularly striking example: the brain has to infer objects, depth, motion, colour, lighting and significance from patterns of photons hitting the retina.

This is why optical illusions are scientifically useful. They reveal situations where the brain's normal assumptions produce an interpretation that conflicts with what is physically present.

The important qualification is that saying “perception is a controlled hallucination” can be misleading. The brain's predictions are constrained by sensory input. You cannot simply hallucinate whatever reality you want. The external world continually pushes back.

A better formulation is:

Conscious perception is a constructed model that is continuously constrained and corrected by sensory evidence.

That is considerably stronger scientifically than saying everything you experience is fiction.


2. The evolutionary argument: survival doesn't require perfect representation

This is the article's most interesting evolutionary claim.

Imagine an ancestral human seeing something moving rapidly in the bushes.

The brain doesn't need to calculate:

  • the precise wavelength of reflected light;

  • the object's exact geometry;

  • its velocity vector;

  • its distance to the millimetre;

  • its probability of being a predator.

It needs to answer something much simpler:

“Should I run?”

A nervous system that produces sufficiently accurate, rapidly actionable representations could outperform one attempting to construct a complete objective description of reality.

This produces an important distinction:

Accuracy:
“Exactly what is happening?”

Utility:
“What interpretation allows me to respond effectively?”

Natural selection directly rewards the second through behaviour and reproductive success. It does not necessarily reward possessing a complete metaphysical description of reality.

But there is a major caveat.

Evolution cannot completely abandon truth

If your internal model were wildly disconnected from reality, you wouldn't survive for very long.

You cannot consistently mistake:

  • a cliff for flat ground,

  • a predator for a harmless object,

  • food for poison,

  • a friend for an enemy,

and remain successful.

So evolution probably favours something more subtle:

a compressed, incomplete, action-oriented representation that remains sufficiently coupled to reality.

That's very different from saying evolution favours falsehood.


3. The brain as a prediction machine

This connects to predictive-processing approaches to neuroscience.

In simplified terms, the brain can be thought of as constantly generating hypotheses about incoming sensory information.

Instead of:

world → senses → consciousness

the process is closer to:

prior expectations + sensory signals → inferred model → conscious experience

For example, when you recognize a partially obscured object, you don't experience a collection of disconnected pixels. Your brain rapidly infers the likely object behind the obstruction.

The extraordinary thing is that you experience the interpretation, not the computational process that produced it.

You don't consciously experience:

“Photons stimulated photoreceptors, which generated neural signals that were transformed through multiple cortical pathways…”

You experience:

“There's a chair.”

That enormous compression is one of the fundamental mysteries of consciousness.


4. Your visual field isn't actually what it feels like

One of the most profound implications is that subjective experience gives us a misleading impression of how much information we're consciously processing.

You feel as though you see an enormous, detailed visual scene.

But the brain doesn't represent every point in that scene with equal resolution.

Your visual system is heavily optimized around:

  • the fovea;

  • attention;

  • movement;

  • contrast;

  • edges;

  • objects;

  • behavioural relevance.

Yet consciousness presents the result as a seemingly seamless world.

This is analogous to a sophisticated video game rendering enormous amounts of apparent detail while allocating computational resources selectively.

The illusion isn't that you're seeing nothing.

The illusion is how complete your seeing feels.


5. The “self” may be a constructed model

This is where neuroscience becomes philosophically explosive.

There isn't a single obvious location in the brain corresponding to a little entity called “me.”

Instead, many systems contribute to what we experience as selfhood:

  • autobiographical memory;

  • body representation;

  • interoception;

  • attention;

  • emotion;

  • social cognition;

  • decision-making;

  • language;

  • future planning.

Your brain integrates these into an apparently continuous subject.

You therefore experience:

“I am one person who has existed continuously through time.”

But the underlying neural machinery is distributed and constantly changing.

That doesn't necessarily mean the self is fake.

A better interpretation is:

The self may be real as a process rather than as a single indivisible entity.

A whirlpool isn't an object in the same sense as a stone, yet the whirlpool is real. Its reality consists in an organized process.

The self could be similar.


6. Memory is particularly unreliable

The article is on much firmer ground here.

Human memory isn't a literal recording system.

Remembering is substantially reconstructive.

When you recall an event, the brain reconstructs it from stored information, contextual knowledge, expectations and other influences. Memories can therefore become distorted.

This produces phenomena such as:

  • false memories;

  • altered details;

  • confidence without accuracy;

  • source-monitoring errors;

  • memory conformity;

  • post-event distortion.

And there's a fascinating paradox:

Confidence and accuracy are not the same thing.

Someone can be absolutely convinced that something happened a particular way and still be mistaken.

This matters enormously because your sense of personal identity depends heavily upon autobiographical memory.

Your feeling of:

“This is who I am because this is what happened to me”

is partly constructed from a database that is itself reconstructive.


7. The self is partly a story about continuity

Consider the person you were at age 10.

Physically, psychologically and socially, that person has changed enormously.

Yet you normally experience:

10-year-old me → teenager me → adult me → present me

as one continuous individual.

The brain constructs a narrative connecting these different states.

This narrative has enormous practical value.

It allows you to:

  • learn from the past;

  • anticipate the future;

  • maintain relationships;

  • accept responsibility;

  • pursue long-term goals;

  • develop values;

  • coordinate behaviour.

So calling the self a “fiction” risks confusing constructed with unreal.

Money is constructed.

Language is constructed.

A marriage is constructed.

A legal corporation is constructed.

Yet constructed things can have enormous causal power.

The same distinction may apply to the self.


8. Emotions aren't simply measurements of external reality

Another excellent point in the article is the treatment of emotion.

Fear does not necessarily mean:

“Danger objectively exists.”

It means something more like:

“My organism is currently treating this situation as potentially dangerous.”

Those aren't equivalent.

You can be frightened by a horror film despite knowing you're sitting safely on a sofa.

You can feel social rejection when someone is simply distracted.

You can feel confident when your evidence is weak.

You can feel threatened by something that isn't actually dangerous.

Emotion therefore isn't a neutral description of reality.

It is partly an action-guiding system.

It tells your organism:

Pay attention.

Approach.

Avoid.

Fight.

Freeze.

Connect.

Protect.

This is why emotions can be psychologically compelling while simultaneously being epistemically unreliable.


9. Anxiety is an excellent example of the narrative machinery

Anxiety demonstrates how the brain can generate a highly convincing future narrative from incomplete information.

Imagine:

“They haven't replied to my message.”

The raw fact is extremely small.

But consciousness can construct:

“They're angry with me.”

which becomes:

“I've done something wrong.”

which becomes:

“They don't respect me.”

which becomes:

“People are losing interest in me.”

The brain has transformed ambiguous information into a coherent story.

The story may be completely wrong.

But it can still produce very real physiological consequences.

This reveals something important:

A conscious narrative doesn't need to be factually correct to influence behaviour.


10. Social reality takes the idea one step further

Humans don't merely construct individual narratives.

We construct shared narratives.

Examples include:

  • money;

  • borders;

  • citizenship;

  • corporations;

  • laws;

  • social status;

  • institutions;

  • brands;

  • political identities.

These aren't imaginary in the trivial sense.

A £20 note is physically just paper and ink.

But because millions of people participate in a shared system of expectations, that piece of paper can buy food.

The crucial distinction is:

Physical reality

Things that exist independently of human agreement.

Social reality

Things whose existence and power depend partly upon collective human practices and beliefs.

The fascinating thing about humans is that we're extraordinarily good at coordinating around shared abstractions.

That ability probably has enormous evolutionary value.


11. But “shared fiction” can become dangerously misleading

Here's where the article's language needs tightening.

Calling money, nations or laws “fictions” can be illuminating, but it can also encourage a lazy conclusion:

“If something is socially constructed, it isn't real.”

That's false.

A socially constructed institution can produce very physical consequences.

A border can determine where soldiers are stationed.

A bank balance can determine whether you eat.

A law can determine whether you go to prison.

A reputation can determine whether someone hires you.

The representation may be constructed while the consequences are completely real.


12. The deepest issue: consciousness may be a compression algorithm

There's another way to interpret the whole argument.

The brain has finite computational resources.

Reality contains an extraordinary amount of information.

Therefore the nervous system cannot construct an exhaustive representation of everything happening around it.

It must compress.

Consciousness may therefore resemble an extremely sophisticated compression system:

Reality → enormous sensory information → neural processing → compressed model → conscious experience

Compression necessarily means throwing information away.

The crucial question becomes:

What information does the brain preserve?

Generally, information relevant to:

  • survival;

  • movement;

  • prediction;

  • reward;

  • danger;

  • social interaction;

  • bodily regulation;

  • long-term goals.

That's why consciousness doesn't resemble a scientific database.

It resembles an action-oriented interface.


13. Donald Hoffman pushes this argument much further

There is a famous philosophical/scientific argument associated with Donald Hoffman that takes the idea considerably beyond the claims established by ordinary neuroscience.

Hoffman's “interface theory of perception” argues, roughly, that natural selection may favour perceptions that are useful rather than perceptions that accurately reveal underlying reality.

The computer desktop is his favourite analogy.

A file icon isn't literally the structure of the data on your hard drive.

It is an interface.

Likewise, the colours, shapes and objects we perceive might function as an interface rather than a literal depiction of ultimate reality.

This is intellectually fascinating.

But it is important not to confuse this with established scientific fact.

The much safer conclusion is:

Perception is an adaptive representation of the world, not a transparent presentation of the world-in-itself.

The stronger claim that perception systematically hides the underlying structure of reality is still a philosophical and scientific hypothesis.


14. Kant anticipated part of this problem

There's an interesting philosophical connection to Immanuel Kant.

Kant distinguished between:

phenomena — reality as it appears to us

and

noumena — reality considered independently of our mode of experiencing it.

Modern neuroscience gives this old philosophical problem a biological dimension.

Your brain doesn't experience “the world in itself.”

It receives signals and constructs an experiential model.

So there's potentially a gap between:

what exists

and

what an organism like us can experience.

But neuroscience hasn't demonstrated that there is some completely inaccessible “true reality” behind perception.

That's the philosophical leap.


15. The most important correction: “fiction” doesn't mean “false”

This is probably the single most important refinement to the article.

There are at least three categories:

1. Directly experienced

“I see a red apple.”

2. Constructed inference

“There is an apple-shaped object in front of me.”

3. External reality

“There is a particular physical arrangement of matter reflecting certain wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation.”

Your conscious experience is not identical to #3.

But it can nevertheless correspond remarkably well to #3.

That's why you can successfully:

  • pick up the apple;

  • bite it;

  • measure it;

  • photograph it;

  • give it to another person;

  • predict what happens when you drop it.

A constructed representation can be imperfect without being fictional in the ordinary sense.


16. Science is essentially humanity's attempt to debug the brain

This is perhaps the most beautiful implication.

Individual consciousness is extremely vulnerable to:

  • confirmation bias;

  • memory distortion;

  • motivated reasoning;

  • perceptual illusions;

  • tribal thinking;

  • overconfidence;

  • emotional reasoning.

Science introduces mechanisms specifically designed to compensate for these weaknesses.

It says:

Don't trust one person's perception.

Measure.

Repeat.

Quantify.

Make predictions.

Try to falsify them.

Let other people attack your conclusion.

Use instruments that extend your senses.

Compare competing explanations.

In that sense, science isn't simply another story produced by consciousness.

It is a social technology for detecting where our individual stories diverge from reality.

That distinction is enormously important.


17. Mindfulness addresses a different layer

Science challenges the accuracy of beliefs.

Mindfulness can challenge our automatic identification with thoughts.

For example, instead of:

“I am a failure.”

you can recognize:

“My mind is currently generating the thought that I am a failure.”

That's a surprisingly profound shift.

The thought doesn't necessarily disappear.

But its epistemic status changes.

It becomes an event occurring in consciousness rather than an unquestionable statement about reality.

This is one reason contemplative traditions have independently spent thousands of years examining the distinction between experience and interpretation.


18. The really radical question is whether consciousness is necessary for the narrative

The article occasionally treats consciousness itself as the brain's storytelling mechanism.

That's not established.

Some cognitive processes clearly occur without conscious awareness.

And researchers disagree profoundly about what consciousness actually does.

Possibilities include:

  • consciousness integrates information;

  • consciousness makes information globally available;

  • consciousness supports flexible planning;

  • consciousness enables certain forms of metacognition;

  • consciousness is an emergent property of recurrent processing;

  • or consciousness may have less causal importance than we intuitively assume.

So we should distinguish:

“The brain constructs models”

from:

“Consciousness exists specifically to construct narratives.”

The first has substantial empirical support.

The second is a much larger theoretical claim.


19. The deepest paradox

Here is where the argument becomes genuinely unsettling.

Suppose your brain constructs your conscious model.

Then your belief that:

“My brain constructs my conscious model”

is itself a product of that brain.

You don't step outside the system to verify it from some completely neutral vantage point.

You are using the model to investigate the machinery producing the model.

This doesn't make neuroscience circular or meaningless.

But it does establish a profound epistemic limitation:

There may be no completely theory-free perspective available to a biological observer.

Every observation is made through some perceptual, conceptual and technological framework.


20. Yet reality pushes back

This is the crucial antidote to nihilism.

If consciousness were simply free-form fiction, you wouldn't expect reality to be so stubbornly predictable.

But it is.

Gravity works whether you believe in it.

A tumour doesn't disappear because your narrative says you're healthy.

A plane crashes if its aerodynamic assumptions are wrong.

A bridge collapses if its engineers misunderstand the forces acting upon it.

A scientific theory survives precisely because the world constrains our stories.

So perhaps consciousness isn't a novelist inventing reality from nothing.

It's more like a mapmaker working with incomplete information.

The map isn't the territory.

But a good map can still get you home.


21. The most defensible conclusion

I'd modify the article's title substantially.

Instead of:

“Almost everything you experience may be a carefully edited fiction.”

a scientifically safer version would be:

“Almost everything you consciously experience is a constructed model of reality, optimized for action rather than exhaustive accuracy.”

That's still astonishing.

It means:

  • perception is constructed;

  • memories are reconstructed;

  • the self is dynamically maintained;

  • emotions interpret rather than merely report;

  • attention determines what becomes salient;

  • social realities depend on shared representations;

  • conscious experience is dramatically compressed relative to the information available in the world.

But it doesn't follow that reality is unknowable.

It means something subtler:

We don't experience reality without mediation. We experience a biologically constructed model that has evolved to keep an organism successfully engaged with reality.

And that may actually explain why humans can simultaneously be remarkably successful at navigating the world and remarkably bad at understanding themselves.

The ultimate lesson isn't “everything is an illusion.”

It's:

Your experience is evidence about reality—not reality itself.

And perhaps the greatest intellectual achievement is learning to distinguish the two.
