The Constructal Law is a principle of physics proposed in 1996 by Duke University professor Adrian Bejan. It states:
"For a finite-size system to persist in time (to live), it must evolve in such a way that it provides easier access to the imposed currents that flow through it."
What It Means in Plain English
Any dynamic system that moves or carries a flow—whether that flow is water, heat, blood, electricity, people, or information—will naturally change its shape and design over time to move that flow as efficiently as possible.
It argues that evolution and design generation in nature are fundamental phenomena of physics, applying equally to living organisms and non-living environments.
Examples Across Different Systems
- Rivers & Trees (Tree-like Networks): Water falling on a landscape naturally carves out tiny trickles that merge into streams, then tributaries, and finally main rivers. This branching shape reduces overall friction and drains the area faster. The same geometric branching occurs in tree limbs (moving nutrients and water) and human lungs or blood vessels (moving oxygen and blood).
- Animal Motion: Flying birds, swimming fish, and running mammals have evolved proportions and movement frequencies that minimize the work required to move across space.
- Human Infrastructure & Cities: Traffic networks spontaneously organize into a combination of small residential streets (slow, local distribution) feeding into wide highways (fast, long-distance flow) to reduce travel times.

- Flow Requires Design: For a system to exist and survive, something must move through it.
- Freedom to Morph: Evolution occurs only if the system has the geometric freedom to adapt its structure over time.
- Direction of Time: The "time arrow" of evolution moves toward configurations that offer greater flow access and less resistance.
