/////////////Choosing the Right Size"A very alarming statistic released by the Centersfor Disease Control and Prevention said women areeating 22 percent more calories than they were 30years ago. That figures out to be about 335calories more each and every day. Wow!We live in the world of Super size everything. Thearticle went on to say that a 2002 study by NewYork University showed portion sizes at populartakeout, fast food and family type restaurantsservings were from 195% to 700% larger than aserving size recommended by U.S. Department ofAgriculture. (USDA)The biggest increases in size were in steak at224% larger, muffins 333% larger, pasta 480%larger and biggest percentage of all wascookies... 700%Unreal! No wonder we are having such a difficulttime controlling our weight as well as that of ourchildren. A recommended portion of steak is 3 oz.The oversize portion is 8 oz. The caloriedifference is 375 and if eaten once a week for ayear that is equal to five and one half poundsweight gain in a year.One ounce of cold cereal is a serving size. Doublethat and eat 2 ounces three times a week for ayear and add another 5 pounds of extra weight.I know that I harp on reading labels and beingcareful about portion sizes, but all of theselittle things can add up to be big things over theyear. A lot of the restaurants have nutritionvalues that you can find on the internet beforeyou go out to eat. Why not check them out and makeyour choices before you go out.Remember all of the visuals about portion sizes...such as a computer mouse for a serving of meat,ice cream serving is the size of two golf ballsand butter is two half-dollar coins stacked on topof each other.Another tip is to order the child size at fastfood restaurants. They are closer in size to whatyou need to have. Have some of Lillie's SouperSoup before you go to help curb your appetite sothe Super size will not be a temptation.Share an entree' or dessert. Ask for the doggiebag at the first of the meal and get it out ofsight before you are tempted to overeat.Thankfully, some of the restaurants are trying toget rid of the Super size portions. Here's to slimming down and feeling great!Lillie

//////////////////// "Suppress Your Appetite and Cravings"We received an interesting testimonial aboutdrinking Chai to help those urgings to "snack."This person said that she had the Chai afterdinner to avoid diving into a "bag chips or achocolate sundae." She felt satisfied and hercravings disappeared after drinking the Chai.For those who are not familiar with Chai(pronounced as a single syllable and rhymes with'pie',) it is the word for tea in many parts ofthe world. Chai is a centuries-old beverage thathas played an important role in many cultures.Chai from India is a spiced milk tea that hasbecome increasingly popular throughout the world.It is generally made up of rich black tea, milk, acombination of various spices, and of sweeteners.There are commercial versions such as CelestialTea, that has a Chai tea bag.According to Audrey Cross, PH.D., nutritionist atRutgers University in New Jersey, Chai suppressesyour appetite and cravings because the cinnamon inChai increases glucose metabolism... preventingthe blood sugar dips that cause cravings.Also, the spices have a warming effect that ispsychologically comforting and makes you lesslikely to emotionally overeat like so many of usdo.Be careful when choosing a Chai drink at some ofthe popular "Coffee Houses" as some of the ChaiLatte's are very high calorie.If you already use Chai on a regular basis, wewould love to hear from you about the results youhave obtained with it.Here's to slimming down and feeling great!Lillie

CIRCUIT WALKS ON THE HOUR,BY THE HOUR

////////////10K STEPS A DAY=5MILES A DAY

///////////////Walking Steps Equivalents 1 mile = 2100 average steps. 1 block = 200 average steps 10 minutes of walking = 1200 steps on average

////////////////Pedometers
Accumulating 10,000 steps (about five miles) a day is recommended as a healthy threshold by many experts, but accurately measuring those steps with a pedometer can be tricky. According to research published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine (BJSM), a pedometer costing less than £1 overestimated the number of steps taken by as much as 1,034%. A study of 973 Stepping Meter pedometers found only a quarter gave measurements within an "acceptable" 10% margin of error, while threequarters over or underestimated by more than 10%. Most of the invalid devices overestimated rather than underestimated how much exercise someone had done. How much to spend: Dr Kristien De Cocker of Ghent University in Belgium, who carried out the BJSM study, says that pedometers costing around £14 should be accurate. Best Buy: Timex SE021 pedometer (£15.99; www.heartratemonitor.co.uk)

////////////////////How Many Steps per Day?
How many steps do you take per day? How many should you take?
6000 Pedometer Steps for HealthRob Sweetgall of Creative Walking, Inc. points to the Harvard Alumni Study that showed walking even 1 mile a day reduced death rates. The most benefit came at approximately 6000 steps per day. For most people, that is the equivalent of walking for an hour a day. These can be accumulated steps throughout the day rather than one long walk.
10,000 Steps for Weight ManagementMany people already get in 3000 or more steps just with daily activity, and are still gaining unwanted weight. To burn off extra calories for weight loss, walk 10,000 steps per day most days of the week.

http://walking.about.com/cs/measure/a/countsteps.htm

Step Length: The distance from the heel print of one foot to the heel print of the other foot. This is the distance traveled forward by a single leg.
Stride Length: This can mean the same thing as step length, or it can mean the distance traveled by the heel of one foot to the next time that same foot strikes down - in other words, two steps, since in that time the other foot has also touched down once. If you set your pedometer for your step length and discover it seems to be halving your distance, read the instructions again - it may want the stride length, which is two steps. Also the reverse - if you at first thought the pedometer needed the stride length but you seem to be getting double the distance, read again as they may have really wanted the step length.

2 STEPS= 1 STRIDE

Estimate by Height These are rough estimates, but useful to check your results by the other methods: Females: Your height x .413 equals your stride length Males: Your height x .415 equals your stride length

USE FEET
eg 6FTX0.415=2.4 FT=1 STRIDE=2 STEPS

SO 1 STEP=1.2 FT=14 IN=35 CM

5 MI=8KM=8000M=800000CM=23000 STEPS?

//////////////////BUDDHISM

Yearn not for a body free of disease and suffering, because without going through pain and illness, sundry desires are easily awakened.
2. Wish not for a life free of mishaps and obstacles, because without them one tends to become arrogant and egotistic.
3. Pray not for a quick shortcut regarding spiritual introspect, because without excruciating effort, one becomes short-learning.
4. Fear not the haunting disturbance of evil while accumulating spiritual strength, because without them one’s determination does not grow solid strong.
5. Hope not for easy success in one’s work, because without difficulties and failures, one tends to undervalue others and become overly proud.
6. Build not relationships on selfish gain, because a relationship based on profit has lost its genuine meaning.
7. Look not for a universal consensus regarding one’s personal opinion, because complete adoption to a single opinion will render narrow mindedness.
8. Expect not repayment or reward from others for one’s services, because calculation and expectation contradicts true service.
9. Engage not irrationally into profitable attractions, because jumping too quickly into temptation may well blind wisdom.
10. Stir not at being victim of injustice, because eagerness to clarify reputation belongs to an ego too attached to loose.

///////////////////////PANTHEISM

All of reality contains both top down and bottom up aspects, but the point I've been making is that monotheism views the top down as primary, that God is an ideal from which we have fallen. Versus the bottom up, evolutionary process, in which the source is the essence out of which we rise. The point where an entity logically goes from being bottom up to top down is when it stops growing and absorbing more outside energy, so that what it does contain settles into ever more stable and eventually stagnant patterns, as entropy sets in. These do eventually dissolve back into being free energy to be incorporated into other growing entities and incorporate whatever information they still contain into these new structures. That is why political structures that are overwhelmingly top down are repressive, while societies that are dynamic appear disordered, since they are constantly having to adapt to fresh input.Information is inherently top down, since it depends on an ordered state, while energy is bottom up, since it is either adding to existing structure, or radiating back out into an expanded context. As I keep pointing out about time, information recedes into the past, as energy proceeds into the future. It is the tendency of the intellect to prioritize information over energy, while the raw animal spirits of politics is more concerned with the energy.Regards,JOHN

//////////////////The fundamental cause of people's unhappiness lies in their tendency to develop attachments of various kinds. Attachments are fetters on one's heart—earthly desires, cravings and so on. In the pre-Lotus Sutra teachings, Shakyamuni taught people the path for freeing themselves from such attachments. The spirit of the Lotus Sutra, however, is not to eradicate earthly desires. When we base ourselves on the Buddhist Law, we can transform earthly desires—just as they are—into enlightenment. This is the principle of "earthly desires are enlightenment." It's not a matter of eradicating attachments but of seeing them clearly. Rather than causing us to abandon our earthly desires and attachments, our Buddhist practice enables us to discern their true nature and utilize them as the driving force to become happy. The truth is that we could not in fact eradicate our attachments even if we so wished.

///////////////////////Analyzing multiple samples from the same subject as if they were independent samples is not the proper statistical approach; however, I doubt that adjusting for that fact would have substantially changed the overarching findings -- we don't put enough blood in culture samples. The authors discuss the implications of their findings at length; given the importance of blood cultures in determining treatment courses, often for very ill children, beginning with an adequate sample is paramount. Clinicians may often be operating with a false sense of security if many blood culture results are negative because they were not adequate specimens, rather than being truly negative. So, this study serves as a reminder to pay individual attention to how much blood is submitted. In addition, educational interventions such as theirs would be relatively minor to conduct and might result in markedly improved quality of care.

///////////////////NCSE encompasses a wide range of diagnoses with variable outcomes and treatment recommendations. NCSE in children is probably under-recognized. It can occur in previously well infants with no preceding convulsive seizures whose only clinical manifestation is a failure to return to normal levels of responsiveness during a severe illness. Children with Dravet syndrome with obtundation status illustrate another challenge: the accompanying EEG patterns might be complex and irregular and differ from the more-uniform patterns seen in adults. Further studies examining the electrographic characteristics of very young children in NCSE would be helpful in aiding the prompt recognition of additional patients. A high index of suspicion is necessary to recognize NCSE, because its association with certain epilepsy syndromes and predisposing conditions is not widely acknowledged. In addition to Dravet syndrome, other syndromes associated with NCSE include Panayiotopoulos syndrome, malignant migrating partial seizures of infancy, LGS, and myoclonic status in nonprogressive encephalopathies. NCSE can also be sandwiched between convulsive episodes of SE in children. Clinical suspicion for NCSE should be high in children who fail to return to baseline function between more-overt seizures.
Specific data in childhood are clearly lacking, but extrapolation from adult studies indicates that aggressive treatment is most warranted in comatose patients. An expeditious but cautious approach is probably indicated for absence SE, complex partial SE and ESES.
To date, EEG has been the main laboratory tool used to confirm NCSE. Other biological markers of NCSE, particularly those that might be applicable in the acute clinical situation, would be very useful, both for recognition of patients with NCSE and for judging the effectiveness of treatments.
Finally, long-term prospective studies are needed to evaluate the harmful potential of NCSE itself as opposed to the underlying circumstances in which it occurs.

Political scientists and psychologists have noted that, on average, conservatives show more structured and persistent cognitive styles, whereas liberals are more responsive to informational complexity, ambiguity and novelty. We tested the hypothesis that these profiles relate to differences in general neurocognitive functioning using event-related potentials, and found that greater liberalism was associated with stronger conflict-related anterior cingulate activity, suggesting greater neurocognitive sensitivity to cues for altering a habitual response pattern.

///////////////////Fire and flood management of coastal swamp enabled first rice paddy cultivation in east China
Nature 449, 459 (2007). doi:10.1038/nature06135
Authors: Y. Zong, Z. Chen, J. B. Innes, C. Chen, Z. Wang & H. Wang
The adoption of cereal cultivation was one of the most important cultural processes in history, marking the transition from hunting and gathering by Mesolithic foragers to the food-producing economy of Neolithic farmers. In the Lower Yangtze region of China, a centre of rice domestication, the timing and system of initial rice cultivation remain unclear. Here we report detailed evidence from Kuahuqiao that reveals the precise cultural and environmental context of rice cultivation at this earliest known Neolithic site in eastern China, 7,700 calibrated years before present (cal. yr bp). Pollen, algal, fungal spore and micro-charcoal data from sediments demonstrate that these Neolithic communities selected lowland swamps for their rice cultivation and settlement, using fire to clear alder-dominated wetland scrub and prepare the site for occupation, then to maintain wet grassland vegetation of paddy type. Regular flooding by slightly brackish water was probably controlled by ‘bunding’ to maintain crop yields. The site’s exploitation ceased when it was overwhelmed by marine inundation 7,550 cal. yr bp. Our results establish that rice cultivation began in coastal wetlands of eastern China, an ecosystem vulnerable to coastal change but of high fertility and productivity, attractions maximized for about two centuries by sustained high levels of cultural management of the environment.

Lois Maxwell, known to millions around the world for her role in over a dozen James Bond films as Miss Moneypenny, died Saturday of cancer. The Golden Globe-winning Canadian actress was 80.
Born in Kitchener in 1927, Lois Hooker ran away from home at age fifteen to join the military. She enrolled in in the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London after being discharged because of her age. She changed her last name and came to Hollywood in 1947, where she hoped to find work acting. Within a year, she had won a Golden Globe for most promising newcomer for her role alongside Ronald Reagan and Shirley Temple in the much-maligned That Hagen Girl.

///////////////////////Daffodils" (1804)
I WANDER'D lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;Beside the lake, beneath the trees,Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the Milky Way,They stretch'd in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:Ten thousand saw I at a glance,Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.
The waves beside them danced; but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:I gazed -- and gazed -- but little thoughtWhat wealth the show to me had brought:
For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;And then my heart with pleasure fills,And dances with the daffodils.

////////////////GOGOL=‘‘The Overcoat’’ is the story of Akaky Akakievich Bashmachkin, an impoverished clerk who has toiled for a number of years in an unspecified department within the huge government bureaucracy in St. Petersburg. The tale is told by an unnamed narrator with a tendency to digress and editorialize. Critics have disagreed about how closely the narrator should be identified with Gogol and about how much sympathy the author intended his readers to feel for Akaky the clerk. In any case, the tone of the narration is at various times condescending, compassionate, humorous and nightmarish.

/////////////////The Overcoat," which was written sporadically over several years during a self-imposed exile in Geneva and Rome, is a particularly dazzling amalgam of these seemingly disparate tendencies in Gogol's writing. The story begins by taking its readers through the mundane and alienating world of a bureaucratic office in St. Petersburg where an awkward, impoverished clerk must scrimp and save in order to afford a badly needed new winter coat. As the story progresses, we enter a fairy-tale world of supernatural revenge, where the clerk's corpse is seen wandering city streets ripping coats off the backs of passersby. Gogol's story is both comic and horrific—at once a scathing social satire, moralistic fable, and psychological study.

And I noticed that the oatmeal had spent exactly three minutes in the microwave, and I didn’t know how I had spent those three minutes. They had slipped me by. Three minutes of this precious life I was so glad to have since I woke up alive in Chile had gone by without my noticing it.

////////////////////////inhaled corticosteroids are the preferred therapy for initiating long-term therapy in children of all ages. Inhaled corticosteroid use has been associated with a number of improvements in clinical outcomes among patients with asthma, including airway eosinophilia, airway inflammation, asthma symptoms, lung function, emergency department visits, hospitalizations, and possibly mortality.

NOT MONTELUKAST-THAT FOR MILD SYMPTOMS

Asthma severity in children under the age of 5 years is assessed clinically and is based on symptoms; no objective measures are available for a child of this age.
Investigators found significant improvement in asthma symptoms and the frequency of asthma exacerbations during administration of inhaled corticosteroid for up to 2 years. Treatment did not affect the likelihood of asthma recurrence after therapy was discontinued.
Allergen exposure may trigger the exacerbation of asthma symptoms in 80% to 90% of children with asthma. Indoor allergens that may stimulate asthma symptoms are produced by several sources, including dust mites, domestic animals, cockroaches, rodents, and mold; parents who smoke tobacco are also a significant risk factor for asthma symptoms.
Treatment adherence is essential for achieving optimal outcomes in controlling long-term asthma and parents of young children are a key step in administering asthma medication. Parent education significantly increases the adherence to asthma therapy for young children. Parents may administer medication during periods when asthma symptoms are at their worst, with treatment adherence decreasing during periods when asthma symptoms are less bothersome. This pattern is especially likely to be viewed as "normal" by parents who have previous experience with oral corticosteroids
