TAKE-HOME MESSAGE
- This Italian retrospective observational cohort study of critically ill patients (N = 3988) with confirmed COVID-19 evaluated the independent risk factors associated with mortality. The patient median age was 63. The majority (79.9%) were men, and 60.5% had at least one comorbidity. The median time from symptoms to ICU admission was 10 days and the median length of ICU stay was 12 days.
- Independent mortality risk factors included: older age, male sex, history of COPD, hypercholesterolemia, type 2 diabetes, high positive end-expiratory pressure or low PaO2:FiO2 ratio, and high fraction of inspired oxygen.
