Watch The Clouds

Carve out some time to find a patch of grass and lean up against a tree.

Leave your phone behind. All the messages and notifications will be there when you return.

Let your mind wander as you immerse yourself in the original screensaver: the sky.

Watch the clouds pass on by.

Notice the different shapes they can take.

Notice the various meanings you can derive from these temporary forms.

A dragon. A flower. An elephant.

Notice the moments where the clouds look just like balls of cotton and nothing more.

Our lives can sometimes feel like this.

We see crystalized meaning. Things make sense.

Other times we see pure potential or nothing at all. Something that has yet to take a discernable form.

Sometimes events in our lives won't make sense until some time has passed.

It's okay to be a in state of not-knowing.

Even if things seem ominous, the dark storm clouds eventually pass on through.

All of life moves in seasons and cycles.

There is so much wisdom in the phrase "This too shall pass."

It's a reminder to appreciate our blessings while we have them.

It's a flame of hope that all suffering is temporary.

And sometimes watching the clouds is enough to gain a seed of this perspective.

To put down our chronic worries and petty grievances.

To discover the beauty that is here and now.

If I may respond. Even if you are in a coma you still are aware. You can NEVER not be aware. You are just not aware that you are aware, because the brain is not allowing you to think thoughts. Think of dreamless sleep. Are you aware? The answer is yes, but once again the brain shuts down for a period of time, not allowing you to consciously experience it. This is very hard to express with language, because language is using speech which emanates from thoughts. Remove all the past conditioning & you will understand with practice & a qualified teacher. Best of luck.

####################

Vedanta and Samkhya on subject-object discrimination The oldest traditions of India call the subject as Purusha and the object as Prakriti. They are usually translated as consciousness and matter. But it is very important to realize that even the thoughts and emotions belong to the category of ‘object’. So, the word ‘matter’ can be little misleading. This discrimination of purusha and prakriti was first used by the Samkhya school of thought, which was adopted by other schools like yoga.

The English word soul means a non-physical entity that resides in the body. But the word Atman, which actually means the Self (the subject) and synonymous with the word Brahman is actually translated as soul in English. Many Indians also understand the word Atman as an entity living inside the body. But Atman is not an entity or an object; it is the subject or the observer self

When someone is using his finger to point to the moon, a one year old kid would look at his finger. It cannot understand that it is supposed to look at the direction that the finger is pointing to. But as an adult you can understand what you are supposed to do. When a spiritual teacher is instructing you, you need to treat his words as finger pointing to the moon too. The reason this is mentioned is because people often get too attached to the words and concepts.

If you observe your mind, you will see that all you notice is a constant flow of thoughts and sensations. Both Buddhism and Science agree that there is really no consistent, unchanging, solid self (the self with the lower case ’s’) that exists. This may be very hard to believe or accept because the idea of a separate individual is so deep rooted that you may consider this as a joke. It may even feel threatening because this self-concept is something that you always want to protect and enhance.

There is a term in Psychology called Cognitive dissonance. This is a mental discomfort that you experience while you perform an action that contradicts with the belief that you have already, especially when the belief is about yourself. You may also experience cognitive dissonance when you encounter facts that contradict with your previous beliefs. Cognitive dissonance happens because of your efforts to maintain a consistent self when such a thing doesn’t exist. One symptom of a liberated life is that you will be free of cognitive dissonance after it happens.

As you do this everyday, pay attention to the unconscious thought patterns, pay attention to the games that your mind is playing and pay attention to the need to become as somebody. This is a very interesting practice and a powerful exploration of your own mind. As you bring awareness to the different layers of mind, you will become more and more peaceful.

Experience the silence within

When in the inner halls of silence, what is still possible by me to contemplate upon?

Gather the mind with one sound of Om. Lead the mind by the mind and bring it to the silence in the heart space within. Into that silence let the mind slip. The job is done.

When in the inner halls of silence, what is still possible by me to contemplate upon?

The itch to do something that never goes even after the mind is quiet. Many names of the truth can be contemplated about.

If we contemplate on a computer or a car, we may not become the same thing. We can get close to own it.

However, the rare privilege of becoming what we think about is only with the self. If I contemplate on the self, I become that. Brahmavid Brahmaiva Bhavati, the one who knows the Brahmaan, becomes the Brahmaan, say the Upanishads.

The Amrita Bindu Upanishad mentioned the process of chanting the sound of Om to reach the soundless state of silence within.

When the mind merges with the silence, then the presence of the thoughts of the world—the names, forms and qualities—cease to hold their sway on us.

That silence has no parts to it. The body has parts: hands, legs, neck, head and waist. The blood that courses through has no parts to it.

In the same way, sounds have parts. They can be classified as good and bad, right and wrong, bright and dull. The divisions that sounds create are innumerable.

The silence in which they spring forth from, sustain and fade into is divisionless.

There are no imaginary mental formations caused by various sounds, words and sentences with different meanings. The silence has got no taint or smear upon it.

When I realise that silence is myself and not anything  else that I see, hear, taste, smell, touch or think about, in a   rice I earn that supreme   state of existence called  the Brahmaan.  This process is foolproof and certain says the rishi who declared this Upanishad.

The Upanishad points out to a goal which is attainable. That goal is a steady and permanent peace of mind and the means is to realise the self.

In the quiet state of mind when all sound ripples cease, the mind can contemplate on the uniformity of this self which is present equally in all and in everything.

Just because an elephant has a big body, it does not mean that the self in the animal is big and just because thebody  of an ant is tiny, it does not mean that the self in the insect is tiny!  There are no false imaginations,  hopes, anxieties and worries in this self. That state of silence is my true reality.

Prajñaparamita is the liberating insight that helps us to overcome all pairs of opposites, such as birth and death, being and non-being, defilement and immaculacy, increasing and decreasing, subject and object, and so on. All phenomena are products of dependent arising: that is the main point of the prajñaparamita teaching. This helps us to get in touch with the true nature of no birth/no death, no being/no non-being, etc., which is the true nature of all phenomena.

CONZE-“Historical facts are rather disconcerting to common-sense.

The Buddhist community is the oldest institution of mankind. It has survived longer than any other institution, except the kindred sect of the Jains. Here you have the big bullying empires of history, guarded by hosts of soldiers, ships and magistrates. Scarcely has one of them lasted longer than three centuries. There you have a movement of deliberate beggars* despised whatever the world valued; who valued whatever the world despises – meekness, generosity, idle contemplation.*

And yet, where these mighty empires, built on greed, hatred and delusion, lasted just a few centuries, the impulse of self-denial carried the community through 2,500 years. ….Darwinism and the other philosophies behind the big empires are very shallow; they have their day – it is really a very short day and not a very restful day while it lasts.

Whereas the great and universal wisdom tradition of mankind goes deep down to the very roots, the very breath and rhythm of life.

It is the meek that will inherit the earth, it is the meek that have inherited the earth – because they alone are willing to live in contact with it.”
