The fundamental doctrine of the Buddha’s teaching is
found in his first sermon known as the "Dhammachakkappavattana
Sutta" or the Sermon of the Turning Point of the Wheel of the
Law. The Buddha is said to have preached this to his first
five disciples at Saranarth. This contains the "Four Noble
Truths" (Ariya-Sacca), thereby including the Eightfold Noble
Path (Ariya-atthangikamagga), the "Three Characteristics of
the fundamental nature of the universe (Tilakkhana) and the
"Conditioned Genersis" or the "Universal Law of Dependent
Origination (Patticca-samuppada). All these are accepted as
basic categories by all the Buddhist Schools.
