The same mind that can create harsh judgments is capable of undoing them through the power of awareness and attention.

Bhagavad Gita 2:11 - ‘Thou hast been lamenting for those not worth thy lamentations! Yet thou dost utter words of lore. The truly wise mourn neither for those who are living nor for those who have passed away.’ - Chapter 2 of the Gita begins the long discourse between Krishna and Arjuna on issues related to self realisation and enlightenment. Arjuna is placed in a difficult position where he must go to war with his family and fellow country man. Arjuna is paralysed in the choice of upholding justice and the killing of those whom he loves. Krishna who has been acting as a servant, a charioteer to Arjuna, is now placed in a position of being Arjuna’s own guru, as Arjuna seeks advice from the timeless sage. Krishna not only speaks to Krishna in how to make the right choice, which is to fight, but uses the whole situation to highlight a more important war that he must engage in, the battle of realising the true self and overcoming the lower forms of one’s nature, namely, freedom from the slavery of the senses.

When we walk the spiritual path, we are always fraught with obstacles. Usually we create those obstacles based on how we perceive and respond. It seems to feel counterintuitive to let things flow in a natural way, that somehow our intervention and efforts will make it better. When we join a religious traditions, we usually feel that the path of goodness or godliness is boring and dry. There is a sense of lamentation in leaving former pleasures behind. Being brought up in the Christian circle, I often felt torn between living as someone of the world and living as someone who belongs to heaven. On the poor part of my pastors, Steve (The Chain Breakers Church) and Joe (The Blessing Church), they were creating dualities that were artificial and resulted in nothing but guilt and self isolation. In fact much of the language used was “you ought to do this and that.” The problem with these artificial dualistic ideals, is one of emotion. The action without the emotion of wanting seems to me quite hypocritical. How can I love God or my fellow brother, if I don’t actually feel it? How can feelings be commanded? How can one enjoy giving money as a tithe (just to improve their lifestyle) if one abhors it and knows it doesn’t get spent on the good of the church or community? - With the risk of going on a tangent lets get back to the point! When we start to create dualities that are not rooted in a right now in this life, we are in trouble.

The thing is heaven and earth are right here and now. The idea of two natures is just an idea. You think you are connecting to your higher or lower self, but how do you know? I don’t think its proper to suppress what one feels or thinks. Because those emotions and thoughts are valid, they do affect us in a real way which is wise to acknowledge. Death and life is a duality, but its a verified one rooted in the realness of what makes nature, nature. The idea of being Godly or Sinful are ideals created by someone. This is why in this verse the Gita says; the wise do not lament for neither the living or the dead. This isn’t saying the wise are stone cold, rather its a call to be more of the observer and objectively reflective, namely through the act of meditation. Like in the Taoist philosophy of Wu Wei, the practitioner radically accepts and changes what is in his power. End the naming of things. End the need for categorising things. Destroy dualistic systems that are highly subjective, leaving you feeling out of sorts. If we can eliminate these ideas of duality, like good or bad, then we will find ourselves being in a more consistent state of equanimity. After all, the good book says; ‘For the law always brings punishment on those who try to obey it. (The only way to avoid breaking the law is to have no law to break!)’ - Romans 4:15. Rid yourself of duality. You are not good or bad, you just are. You will at one moment be heavenly and the next be earthly. Meditate and return to your real state.
